Sar bout the newb quesion

My brother has been using my other Mark VIII I have because his ride is in the shop past 3 months. He has a habit of waiting until the last fume of gas before even thinking about refilling. 3 weeks ago my brother ran out of gas on the Mark(4th time he emptied the Mark) and luckily was near a gas station to push it to and call me to rescue him, again. I get there and filled it up but the car wouldn't turn on as the starter kept clicking like the battery was dead, lights were on but somewhat dim I suppose. A 15 min connection turned it on successfully where a 5 min jump didn't do squat. Figured all was well and we all went home.

The next morning my brother is texting me again that the car is dead, so I then took the battery to Advanced Auto Parts to test it. The receipt they showed me said the battery only had 230CCA out of 990CCA, so we left it there for a charge. We picked up the battery and all went well until the next morning when I got a text about the car being dead again.

After a 5-10 second jump, I drove it around to charge it and I could feel a difference in power than when I first bought it. A rough idle accompanied by a lag when lightly accelerating as it'll drop RPMs before slowly picking back up. The car has lost significant MPG as I went through half a tank(was full when I started driving) with only 35 minutes of cruising on 40 mph road while the console reads a ridiculous 9-11 MPG. I can sometimes hear a light fart when the car is sitting still, kind of like a "puh puh puh puh" which was never there beforehand, but I can't exactly say it's a misfire from cylinders.

Either way, I think I can attribute the performance to my brother's low maintenance impacting the fuel system and am prepared to tackle it tomorrow. As for the car being dead continuously, I remain uncertain. I will say that as I'm paying to fill the tank when my brother called me 3 weeks ago, the cashier told me that my brother kept cranking the car in a futile attempt to turn it back on for about 3 minutes before I showed up.

Can all that cranking my brother did really "kill" the battery or alternator from so much erroneous attempts to crank it on?

it will drain the battey and if its old it could kill it. if its out of gas why in the world is he just sitting there cranking it still? id take the car away from him and make his ass walk.

Dude have you tested the ALT?? That should be the first thing you posted.Charge battery and then start car and read Volts with volt meter. Needs to be 14.6 (ref) volts idling.

X2 plus the gas cools the fuel pump! He is killing your fuel pump! Show respect when borrowing others stuff or don't borrow it!

Figured. Anyways, I'm not too disappointed because I already know how he treats his own car so I expected it to a certain degree, but also because this my project Mark VIII. It isn't my baby like my Prairie Tan which I plan to keep at stock for as long as I can with it's low miles, that would've angered me.

I haven't done a thorough troubleshooting on the alternator besides the commonly suggested removing of the terminals from the battery while the car is on to see if the alternator can keep the car running. Which it did. Also, after searching here and on google without the definitive answer but hinting towards it, I figured it'd be either the battery and/or the alternator to be affected.

Not to big of a bummer because I have a replacement battery & alternator sitting in my uncles garage just in case and this is my project car.

Thanks for the input!

DO NOT REMOVE BATTERY CABLES WHILE RUNNING! Not good for modern computer controlled cars.

Mine didn't put out 14.6 with a new cobra alt and good battery...

Youre right about not removing the cables though.

Your brother is an idiot...

And, disconnecting the battery with the engine running is a food way to ruin your electronics.

Hey, just noticed you're from Franklin Park..I assume that's Franklin Park Illinois? I used to live in Schiller Park (25th and Irving) you're the only member I know of who's anywhere near me..

ummm there is a lot of member is mw. you got k9 down in peoria for instance, now you have to go to the beach party

Please people when I posted 14.6 V there is (ref) after it this means reference that means close to 14.6 NOT necessarily 14.6 but NOT 13.0 or 13.6 or 12.4.

I believe there are a few more around the area and I've always wondered if any of the other Marks I see are members as well. The one I come across the most is a red 2nd gen LSC rolling on what seems to be 20" rims and I usually see it cruising from York & Devon to York & North. In fact, it looks a lot like the Mark in sbcaprice305's signature.

Yea I read something like that as well right after I had done that little check up and can only hope that I didn't add on to my brothers apathy in car maintenance. Even so, as you have witnessed through my very own testimony, idiocy must run in the family. :(

Beerdog, no kidding? I'm right by arlington park race track, but I'm always in the bg area at xsport and fox n hound on dundee, never see any marks around there though..what year and color is yours? I'll have to be on the lookout.

And peoria isn't very close, 3 hours south of here..where is this beach meet you speak of though?? I may be interested..

Scallywag, I was just in river grove the other day getting lunch at gene n judes and saw a black lsc parked on grand ave. just west of river rd. at some muffler shop..car looked like a pile though, had those retarded fender vents on it too..

If you're ever in "downtown" Franklin park my dad's good friend owns a shop on the corner of belmont and 25th and has a black 94 with 50 some thousand orig miles..sometimes he has it parked out front of the shop.

Also there was a red 2nd gen lsc that I saw over the summer at a cruise night in palatine, I talked to the guy who owned it, it had aftermarket rims and 4:10s according to what he said..hes a member on some forum can't remember which one though, it was before I joined lvc..I think he was on LOD or something, not a member there though.
