Cabin whistle

for a few weeks (or months?) now, with the windows up, I've noticed a whistling noise inside: it is constant in amplitude and has a variable frequency (Hz) and sounds like a window is slightly open, it comes and goes @ 40 mph...
-I'm wondring if it could be a broken seal around the windshield, or another fixed window?
-only mods I've had are the exhaust and the tune; I know my exhaust guy was not 100% top-notch
...I also hear a low-volume electronic type of hummm/sizzle sound periodically, but I presume I'll never identify that with certainity- maybe it's the PCM or tranny?

Sounds like side window or gasket not lining up. Possible sun roof if you have one, not closed?
 
no sunroof..I might have to break out the stethoscope!
-tricky to use while cruising at 50 mph though :cool:

Take a friend along. I do that to find noises I can't quite locate. Someone crawling around the car with their ears on can often find stuff you can't quite identify from the drivers seat.

Didn't you say that the molding around the window is bubbled out? If so, that's your noise. My friend's 97 has the same annoying whistle.

I suspected that as the source, but when I roll either window down I can still hear the high pitched whistle in addition to the sound of the windows open...I did search for the origin w/ stethoscope while driving >40 mph; drivers side window is not the source...afraid to check the pass side while driving...lol
 
I adjusted the drivers side mirror on mine to stop the noise. Meaning the housing.
 
Come to think of it, my Gen1s mirrors made wind noise too
 
awhile back I jacked up my car pretty high, on both sides; after lowering it I noticed the door hinges started creaking...something got racked?
i wonder if that could have caused my annoying whistle..the doors close just fine, and all the lines match up to the naked eye...just a little creaking from the hinges
 
Dnsherrill, just a thought. I had the electronic hum and the noise was coming from the shifter. Wiggle it a little bit and see if the noise changes.
 
I treated my door seals with white litho grease for a better seal.
Napa Sil Glyde works good also.

Surprisingly the new front OEM Air shocks have made the air noise go away, or less noticeable.

what caused the noise? did you do anything about it?..it's driving me nuts...sounds like a window is cracked open..ONLY at or above 40-45 mph, very predictable hissing...I decided to troubleshoot by masking over anything that looks like a gap in the seal around the windshield
 
I told you what it was in post 7. To make sure I'm right, go to Home Depot. They have silicone that you can peel off. Seal the window where that black rubberized molding is corroded. Test it then remove the silicone. I've been down this road.

right now it's a noisy, unsettling road!
-and to your diagnosis, it makes sense that with the windows partially or mostly down, the whistle is still there?
 
My driver's side door isn't sealing completely, I get whistling / a very light breeze from the door at about 10 o'clock from the headlight switch. I'm guessing the weather stripping is 'tired'. Anyone have any home grown solutions to fatten up the seal or tighten it up or what have you?

i took the quick and dirty route...just taped over the corroded runners...both sides;

I thought that this knocked it down a bit, and caused it to begin at a higher speed, but it's still there
...maybe it is the gasket between the door and front fender; rolling the window down does not get rid of the whistle, nor does rpm change affect the noise
 
My 97 had one, would dive me crazy.
Rear window seal was shot, sun beat to death ripped and torn.

New "junkyard" rear window/seal fixed it for me.

black lasagna? did you trouble shoot it before hand to determine the source?
