Bought some sand paper and a rattle can and went to town!

So I had some time today and wanted to try something out. My passenger side headlight was cloudy and that base model trim under my drivers headlight that had most of the chrome pealed off was gettin to me. Plus I wanted some touch up paint so I went to the place that said they could make me the paint since its discontinued.
The lady was really nice and said that she could get close but I would need the paint ($9) and some catalyst ($9) as well as the brush and that really for rock chips I should get Deep Jewel Green since its the same color (mix wise) but has more metallic flake. Upside is its still available so its cheap. So I went to Autozone and bought a touch up bottle/spray can and some 1000, 1500 and 2000 gritt sand paper for the lense and some 800 for the trim piece.

I tried the touch up paint on my chips and was bummed cause it was lighter but after 15 minutes it dried to such a good match that I couldnt see them unless I was a foot away and looking for them. :wrench
So I felt confident and prepped the trim piece to spray paint it. Sanded with 800 then 1000. One piece of the chrome just did not want to come off and I didnt want to hurt it and my arms were sore cause I had done the headlight already so I said "screw it, aint gonna come out good anyway. :lol: I should point out that I cant paint and every time it sux so my expectations were low. It was worse after I did one light coat and realized I forgot to get primer.:mad: Screw it, I let it sit about 10 min between coats and put 6 coats on it. After I put it together I finnished reading the can (yes I am a tard) and see they want to use clear too.:( So in a few days after it cures a bit I will just glaze and wax it with the professional stuff I have. I also touched up the big rock chips in the bumper.

The headlight was also new teritory for me and I followed some advice I read on here. (yes I use the search function sometimes) :lol:
So I sanded them with 1000 gritt untill I couldnt see the haze in the lense and then did 1500 gritt and finnished with 2000 gritt. I then put a Lake Country orange pad on my Porter Cable on speed 3 and hit it with Meguires professional scratch/deswirl product. After that I hit it with Meguires clear plastic polish on speed 4. Still wasnt clear enough so I put on a finnishing pad and used Meguires professional glaze on speed 5 and that got it about as good as I can get it.


So let me know what you guys think. :D

After polishing. I couldnt seem to get the glare form the chrome reflection down in the pics. Plus it still is not as nice as my drivers side that has a new lense on an old housing. I need to find a new passenger lense and a new drivers side reflector as mine is spotted and pitted.... yet the passenger sides reflector is perfect. :confused:

I will take some pics tomorrow in the daylight so I can really see how bad the mis-match is. With the light on it it looks pretty damn close but daylight will tell all.

You will probably need to use a more cutting compound to really get any effect with a DA... go buy some Meguiars 105 and 205...
 
Really? Cool! I will try that. I need to order another orange pad though cause mine is shot. So do I hit it with the 105 then the 205 and then polish it?
 
I used the $20 Wal-Mart kit and my drivers side came out great, passenger not as great but usable.

105 is for cutting and 205 is for finishing... it would also do wonders to your paint...

I'll try and look up a write up on the Kevin Brown method...

I have a method for my paint, I just gotta stop being lazy and do it again. Last time I did it (year ago) this was my result. :D

lincolnboy: No, I am on unemployment now. The company that layed me off two months ago just got bought out and the district manager spoke to me yesterday. He wants me back so next week Thursday I get to run his main store for a couple days and then I take over the Waco store in a couple weeks. After I get that store back on track then he wants me to run the store by my house. So it all works out. :D

KK: I know and used to have a detailing shop so I have tried hundreds of different ways. I have developed my own pattern that I like the best and am just gonna stick with it. My results have zero swirl marks and a deep deep gloss that lasts for several months and you cant feel a single "bump" in the paint.


Anyway, I took some daytime pics to see how it blended. Its no where near perfect but its a ton better then before.

In this pic you can see the deep large scraped on the drivers corner of the bumper.

Sure! I read the bottle and do what it says. :p


I use Meguires car wash with a micro fibre sponge. Then I clay it with Clay Magic and use Meguires instant detailer to keep it wet. I then hit it with Meguires machine swirl remover on a Lake Country orange pad with my Porter Cable set at speed 2.5 then up it to speed 3 untill it breaks down. Then I use a foam pad on the PC and use Meguires Professional glaze on speed 3 then up it to 3.5 untill its almost glossy. This step isnt mandatory and it just allows the gloss to last longer and look a tad deeper.
Then I use Meguires NXG wax on a black finnishing pad set to speed 5.
After each step I remove the chemicals with fresh micro fibre towels.
Sometimes after all that I will use my little Wal Mart POS buffer with a micro fibre pad and do a dry pass on the whole car. It makes the car look wet when I am done.

Using those steps I turned this:

Lets just say this.... I worked on a car that with a foam cutting pad, and 1z intense polish at ruffly 1800rpm I barely made any noticeable correction...
