the 98 i bought has had 2 blend door actuators replaced on it already and now i see that it is broke again! the arm collar is what is broke as usual . can i just get the arm somewhere?

why bother, the whole assembly is 26 bucks from max at chapman ford. when you get the new unit, pull the black arm off, go to homedepot in the plumbing section and buy a half inch brass compression fitting ferrule and slip it over the base of the black arm, then reinsert it back into the blend door motor, it will never break again. you need this

Great stuff. I am about to do this.

This seems like the perfect time for me to ask a stupid question, and make an ass of myself!

What additional purpose does that fitting provide? Just provide extra support?

So it's not the actuator at all? But the arm that moves it? I just move my by hand it's almost time to turn it back to warm been some cool mornings lately

At this point, I do the same thing. Reach up in there and move the arm all the way to the right.

Can you get to it by pulling out the glove box? Is it in the same location on a towncar?

I know mine is stripped.

Thanks. I was afraid it was going to require pulling the dash, exactly why i haven't touched it.

You don't have to pull the whole thing, not even w/ the old write up. Just gotta pull it out far enough to put the new one in.

Oooooookayyyyy!!! Since I've only been a Gen 2 guy for the last 7 months or so I've always heard about this "blend door issue" as something I never had to worry about but now that I own a couple Gen 2's I'm worried. I don't have the patience to do everything mentioned on the step by step link above. I'm actually not liking this at all! DAMN!

It's not nearly as hard as it looks. I've done three for various people, and the first one I did before there were any writeups. I just went with hints from others and looking at the service manual. It's just time-consuming, not difficult.
Much of the stuff under the hood and under the car terrifies me a whole lot more.

still looks like something i dont want to do, knowing mine doesnt work. on the other hand i have never had heat working in any of my cars in flirida, leaking heater cores mostly, bypass in a couple of mustangs and my impala.and my gta t/a never had it when i got it or my 2 iroc's either. ill wear a sweatshirt.was joking with a buddy the other day, did any t-birds ever have t-tops?

All,

I have seen mid 70's Thunderbirds with T-Tops ! I can not say for sure if they were factory installed by Ford ! Some companys offered aftermarket conversions !

I installed GM A body T-tops in my 77 Eldorado Biarritz in 1980 !

Good Luck,
Sonny

Ugh...I'm going to have to do the fruggin blend door on my '97 too. The guy I bought it from said he fixed the dam thing when he bought it (and I'm pretty sure he did, there are some small cracks in the woodgrain center stack and some of the dash and side floor panels weren't fitting right when I got it). Now it's broken again. Good thing it's been cool lately. I just moved the little arm under the glove box to the right to set it to warm and I'm good to go. Unfortunately, I'll need cool air eventually. Funny thing is, it seems to want to work but it looks like it's in a bind. When I'm looking at the arm under the gb, I can lower the temp on the hvac and it will move to the left. But when I raise the temp, it won't move back. I have to move it by hand. I hosed it down with silicone lube when I set it to warm, but I haven't moved it since. I am so not looking forward to fixing this. I can see it will not be a fun day at all.
