Best way to Drag?

so whats the best method when drag racing these cars at the strip. is it best to do no TC no OD and just put the car in drive and smasht he accelerator or is it best to utilize the 1 gear then slam it up into 2nd gear? when racing what do you guys do what will get ya out the gate best. is it even safe to put it in first and bang it up into second while driving or drop it from drive to 1st and then up to 2nd?
 
Manually shifting might not be the best idea on the old style OWC in 93-97's...

The sort of agreed on method, TC off, OD off, leave from idle and shock the converter...
 
Ummmm... instead of holding the brake and bringing the rpms up you just let is sit at idle and romp the gas, it just shocks it... dunno a better way to say it...

From lots of bracket racing Tommy says leave at 1000rpms for consistency, shocking is for best ET...
 
There's not really a best way for all Marks... my old 94 seemed to like launching at about 1800rpm, my 93 likes 'shocking' or flashing the converter, my friends stalled 97 likes launching at around 2000rpm... Trial and error is the only way to know what your car (and your track) likes.
 
It is very difficult to be consistent when stalling the converter. For a stock drivetrain, TC & OD off and launch from idle.
 
It is difficult being consistant with a full power stock Mark VIII... you will blow the tires off shocking the converter becase of lack of trac-loc... it won't happen every time depending on track condition but it has happend to me frequently with several different Mark VIII's...
 
Every car is different. Leaving at idle my Mustang GT used to bog off the line, however if I held it at about 2200rpms and slipped the clutch out just right it would take off like a rocket without even chirping the tires.

My best advise is somewhat echoing others...no one can really tell you how to drive good, you need to just learn what your car likes. I couldn't even begin to explain how I drive, I don't even really know, I just do it. Trial and error and don't get overexcited otherwise your tires will go up in smoke while you get a view of your competitions taillights.
 
For my set-up I think stalling the converter to 2000 rpm's is the best. Tried off idle and it didn't work out as good for my car and my driving. I'm more concered with the rt rather than the fastest pass. Go try it and see what you get, then make your choice. go have some fun
 
Track conditions prevail IMO. My best time was when I pegged the converter, but the track (Cecil County) was fully prepped on TNT day and traction was excellent.
