I've done heater cores on a few Mustangs and an Aerostar van. I don't envy you one bit.
 
I would do what your avatar is doing before I would want to do the heater core in our cars. And I'm a mechanic. HUH maybe thats why.
 
He may want to do that half way through the job, lol, j/k...
It's not to bad, take your time and label stuff if your not sure and it should go smooth. I got to do the heater core once in my driveway here once when it was -20*C out, that was fun. At least the ac doesn't need to be evac'd on the VIII's like some Fords ;)
I'd recommend a genuine Ford core too, I used an aftermarket one in my VII and had to do it again a year later, but never had trouble again with the Ford one...
Which car did this happen to, the conv?
 
I bypassed my heated core at the motor with a cut 180 hose....just because my hoses were leaking and ID have to drop the motor to get to them
