Angel Eyes Operation 101

The angel eyes do NOT use a ballast.

edit: let me be specific, the Umnitza angel eyes do not require or have a ballast.

Not really a ballast I suppose, but what would you call the little boxes they come with? I just called them ballast, they look like it.

Not sure what they call it either, sort of a little voltage controller/wiring harness? lol

I also have a set of the oracle angel eyes with the actual ballasts and I don't want people to get confused and think they will have two more of those large things to deal with if they get the umnitzas, because they are a much more elegant solution.

I've only used umnitaza so I didn't know other rings needed actual ballast. You bought oracle's but didn't like them? Did you ever install them?

Hey Tru, how about some pictures of your headlights

I bought the Oracle's during winter back before I ever joined LVC. While I was waiting for it to get warm enough to do the install I saw your umnitza's and they just looked way better. Checked their ebay page and they looked like a simpler, more robust solution and my plans changed. Still got the Oracle's new in the box. See the two ballasts pictures. The rings are in the photo too but they are so thin it's hard to tell.

If the rings are CCFL (which are cold cathode tubes), then they will have somewhat of a ballast. The LED's just have a control board that contains the circuit and resistance to power them. The Umnitza kit includes 2 control boards - one for each side. One control board is encased in a small plastic box, and the other just has some thermal vinyl/shielding wrapped around it.

Maybe someone else can confirm, but I think the kit is based on what is in a BMW X5, which may be related to how the control boards are installed or mounted in that vehilce (as to why one is in a box, and the other is wrapped).

Hmm I just thought they were running low on boxes so they threw the stink wrap on.

Im still not fully convinced on whether im going to install mine.

They look good but i dont want them to fail and have to go back in and be replaced. Dont wanna mess with the wiring either. So i may have a set up for sale.

:eek2: Going back in would be easy, no dremeling required the second time. Wiring takes less then 10 minutes and that includes waiting for the soldering iron to warm up.

Just giving you a hard time.

Somebody come over and knock me upside the head and convince me.

lol.

Honestly the chances of the rings failing are super low....

I think Alax and that guy with the 2 little LEDs in one of his rings are the only cases I can think of. And a ton of people on here own them.

Agreed. Plus, I think mine fails because I might have broken something inside trying to stretch it to it's max. I stretch it almost twice as much as you need to, as everyone else becasue since I was the first to stretch them, I wanted to see how safely one could stretch it to the needed size for future guys.

One can't pass up the perfect "Thats what she said moment". :D

That's a good one
Wow that sounds wrong

Nope. The rings are crap. You're local to me Black, so I'll give you $50 so this mistake is not a total loss for you. :-)

But seriously, buying them and having them in your possession and then not installing them would be just about the most pink thing LVC has ever heard of.

Once you get the guts to cut, it moves along pretty smooth. I can't tell you the number of questions I bugged Alax7 with, and after I started cutting it was "oh, NOW I see what he was talking about." If you take your time and are steady with a dremel, ANYONE can do it (I'm proof of that). :p

Enough of us have done them so if you start or have questions before starting, we can get you going.

Once you start cutting one, you'll see it's not as bad as you think it is right now.

Yeah and I'm probably the worst person at explaining things. It's really hard to mess your lights up, it's just scary to start

Actually Alex, you did a LOT more than most people would have. Pics and a full install video (even accelerated for watchers' convenience) - that was over-the-top. A lot of us owe you a ton of gratitude for all the help and guidance you provided. I think a lot of the installs would have gone south without it!
