Aftermarket HID Install Question

I know i'm included in the headlight issue. I'm also fabricating my holder because the inside of the housing where the light fits in is curved (Concave) so to get a perfect fit you would need something that has give (I.E. rubber) because the hole for the light is off center and therefore the base of the light sits at a slant.

That doesn't sound anything like the Gen 1 HID housings that I've seen. Got a pic?

Mine too curves out where the bulb mounts(inner part of the hole, not where the screws mount) I can snag a pic later after work


The curve he is talking about is the curve of the reflector carried through the mounting hole.
 
You won't be able to to take a picture of it and show the curve IMO. I just put it all back together and I don't feel like removing them for the 5th time lol. But willis is right. The ring that is used to mount the three screws is not curved. The interior (like willis said the opposite side of the refractor) gap where the new 9006 bulb's base sits is curved. It's tricky on getting them seated right but just takes a few moments. I ended up using NoLimit's trick and used the rubber circle holding the wired together with the new hid bulb (ended up cutting it hopefully ddmtuning won't give me an issue with warranty) between the bulb base and a flat mounting bracket.

I'll attempt to get a pic when I get home today as mine aren't assembled.
 
Almost on topic. Has anyone just cleaned up the housings and dumped some chrome paint into the headlight reflector and swirled it around to get some reflection happening in the ... reflectors? Seems like a way to avoid having to split the housing.

Here's the best I can get you can kinda see that it curves out, it is not flat.

Btw ignore what's left of the silicone from the previous owner:p
 
Just use the rubber ring that is holding the HID bulb's wiring together. That is what I ended up doing and the ring seems almost designed to fit in there.
Painting the reflector IMO might lead to trouble unless someone has done it with good results on here. I don't know whether they left it unpainted because it was cheaper to just paint from one side or did they leave it unpainted because a direct reflection of the light would cause the paint to diminish? We know that HID arc burns much hotter than that of halogen coil but it creates much less radiant heat so it should be safer than using halogens.
Also, the whole debate on 55w vs 35w. The 55w tend to heat the housing more than the 35w but this got me to thinking. When they designed the housing it was designed for halogens also, which create much more radiant heat. It's not like the materials made for the halogen part of the housing is different than that of the HID part. So technically it should be able to sustain the heat of a 55w kit, yes?

if you have the fitment problem just take any piece of rubber a little bit thinner than a quarter and put it around the bulb on the connector side and then put the adapter over that and screw them in. Does anyone know what size the screws are?? all my stock ones are rusty and rounded out:( and i cant seem to find any that fit... or does anyone have a few extra they would hook a buddy up with??:D

Yes even 50/55w HID kits generate less constant heat then the halogens so they should be all good.

Guess i will wait to install them to get a better understanding. I went with DDM 35 watt kit hopefully it has the rubber peice people are talking. In regards to the screw size your not the only one that wants to know this. Mine never had the screws in em so im starting off already boned. but meh. I saw somewhere someone suggested taking the housings in to lowes and just fetting a bunch of them. but to be careful if you get to long of a screw even if it fits it can still break the screw area.

I already had the slim digital ballasts and I got my bulbs from DDM, 5000K and they came with the rubber rings around each bulb wiring. I took scissors and cut straight into one side. Once I broke the circle, I then took the scissors and cut the rubber ring that I needed and it did fit into the housing, like it was made for it. I then took one of DLF's adapters and put them on top of the rubber to seal out any moisture.

As for the screw size, I ended up finding some here at home but still cracked a few holes but the bulbs are being held in tight. It's nothing that JB Weld won't fix, if needed. I wished I had taken one of the housings inside of Lowe's or Home Depot and dug around until finding exactly what they needed but I never did. Now that I have them in, I'm not sure that I'm even going to keep them. Thinking about selling the housings, bulbs, and adapters. They might look good in the daylight but my new halogen housings with 6000K HID's put out more light IMO. I'm not too crazy about the HID housings. I think they're overrated.

yea i took mine to my local hardware store and the closest they had was 6-32x 1/4 and the length was right but 6-32 was a tad to big.

yea well I just got a box of 6-32x 1/4 self tappers that might work but they are a little bigger so i worried they will crack the holes, so I'm holding out for to use those for a last resort. I'm honestly only worried about the bottom hole because they have the least amount of plastic.

I promise, it's nothing that JB Weld won't fix, if you do crack one.

I didn't have any issues using my adapters and installing 9006 bulbs from DDM in Gen 1 HID housings, so I don't know what to tell you. :confused:

It would appear that there may be some variations in either the Gen 1 housings or the aftermarket HID bulbs.

I've sold over 160 pairs of my adapters, and these are the first issues that I've read about.

The Gen 2 housings are slightly convex as well, and it's never come up as an issue.
