im changing out my amp in my thx nav setup in my ls for the purpose of trying to get the highs in my rear 6x9 that i just changed out to alpine type r's. i believe im going to have to use a line converter to another speaker to get this to work.. i also want to get a little more out of my current speakers. any opinions on what size and brand amp to go with

I would go with a alpine 30x4 amp to get them factory speakers a little more sound I did 30x4 in my escalade and it helped it out alot

so around how many watts should i be looking for? does the channel amount matter? when you add a new amp ( i have an 03' w/ thx factory amp) do i need to run new power wire to the battery too? and also are there any changes to the factory nav. unit im going to have to change either>?

I'd just pay for the install personally...I used to do stuff myself but now the cars are too complicated you don't wanna mess nothing up and be screwed plus when you get rid of the car they'll take it out for you too.

bump. I am buying a new amp asap and i want to know how big of an amp to get. also is it just plug and play or am i going to have to run a new power wire to the battery and re-wire the headunit wires?

If you install a new amp then you are really going to want to run a dedicated power line to the battery. If you have the stock unit, you are probably going to have to tap into the stock wires to get the signal and to send the signal. If you arn't very comfortable doing this, have an audio shop do it.

so you do have to tap into other wires? I have been hearing different things from different people. All i want is to get my alpine type r's 6x9 to run highs. If someone has done this succesfully please pm me with what you did. and again what size amp should i be looking at?

Dear Blacked03ls,

If you are not comfortable installing audio components (and it sounds as you are not) please have a qualified shop do it. They will charge you for their time but you will not mess anything up that way. Crossing wires and fiddeling around behind your head unit when you don't know what you are doing has the potential to ruin your stock system and possibly more.

Now to your questions. You have not provided quite enough information to get a legitimate response to your amp question. Please fill in some blanks for me and I can offer some assistance.
Do you have all factory speakers besides the type R's you installed in the rear deck?
Do you intend to amp only the 2 type R 6x9's?
Do you have a place in mind to install your new amp?

Here's some general advise for you: Match your speakers and your amp. If your 6x9's say they can handle 60 watts RMS then get an amp with about that much power RMS. A little more or less will not hurt. If you plan to amp 2 full range speakers, get a 2-channel amp, if you plan to amp 4 full range speakers get a 4-channel amp. That is generally the best bang for your buck.

You will not be able to use the line leads currently going to your rear deck since the head unit only puts out low frequencies through those lines (this you probably already knew). If you are mechanically inclined you can tap the speaker wires leading to your rear doors and use that tap for the line input of your new amp.... again if you do not feel comfortable taking apart your car and hooking up wires then have a professional do it.

Personally I recommend either leaving a system completely stock (as far as the midrange speakers are concerned) or going all aftermarket. If you amp the 6x9's and not the rest of the speakers it will likely dround out your door speakers. Either way you will lose your THX sound quality.

I have alpine type R's in all doors and the MRP-F450 amp powering them. That is a good amp with great power for not a lot of $$. It puts out 70 watts RMS x4 or 200 watts RMS x2.

Hope that helps,
Nate

yes the only speakers that are aftermarket are the two 6x9 in the back... i do not know whether i want to amp all the speakers, is the amp underneath the back lid only powering the two 6x9 or the whole system? would it be a lot more difficult to wire all the speakers to that amp? i work at a dealership and im good freinds with a tech that does a lot of audio work and installs so hes gonna help me out with all this but i just want to know how much time and what the best route is. where would you place the amp? i would figure the new amp would have to be real close the same size as the stock to put it in the same spot. im looking to buy a new amp asap so i can get this project going in the next week or so....
