I was responding to something that was said to me on Jamie's thread where he shows his video, and realized it was thread hijacking in the worst way. So I thought it was more polite to just start a new thread and thereby not pollute his. So here goes.

-------------------

He's got kooks headers...you don't. The faster the air gets into and out of the engine the faster the car will rev. This is also true with lightened driveshaft components...

You know, I kind of feel like Rodney Dangerfield around here.

Here are a a couple of articles that I wrote about exhaust a good while back:

http://www.streettostrip.com/content/view/35/85/
http://www.streettostrip.com/content/view/34/85/
http://www.streettostrip.com/content/view/39/85/

I am quite clear on what a header is and both the theory and practice behind them. The reason I was "hmmm"ing is because my exposure to anyone else running a Mark VIII in any kind of competitive fashion is rather limited and I am always gathering information and comparing that to either what I already know or to how my own car performs in a similar environment.

When I purchased my car the stall converter was stupendously low... at 900 rpm the back tires would break free on a full brake stand. When I replaced my stall the one that was in there was obviously not stock and now on the rare occasion that I get to see someone else that has a stock converter, I try to mentally compare that to my own experiences.

Jamie is someone that I not only have purchased from in the past, but someone I look towards as a person who knows what they are doing with their car and as such I pay attention and ask questions. I guess I should have not posted that "hmmm" when you said he has a stock converter as it really was just an internalization on my part. I was typographically transmitting my thought process.

Ripped Camel I appreciate greatly the information and help that you are funneling my way, so don't take this outburst as anything other than frustration on my part. It's annoying to be able to run an 11.96 in the quarter and still have everyone around you think you have no idea what you are doing.

When I started going to the local dragstrip about the only attention I ever got was a fairly routine question along the lines of "why did you bring that thing here?". I research, compile, experiment and move VERY slowly. 4 years and in excess of 500 runs later I was consistently in the low 12s and STILL if my car was parked in the pits with the engine bay open, people would stop and look at the mustang next to me that had a 2 valve 215 horsepower motor and was turning high 14s. I could cross the finish line at the same time the Honda next to me was crossing the 1000 foot mark and when I got back to the pits, everyone would be asking what the guy had done to the Honda. That kind of frustration and lack of respect I have come to accept as just the cost of bringing a luxury car to a sports car fight, but to come onto a Lincoln forum and get that same kind of assumptive dismissiveness stings a bit.

I am just ranting and expressing here, so don't think I am addressing anyone personally especially Ripped Camel. I am just frustrated!

Where do you race? The couple of times my wife ran ours we got lots of attention.

It just kind of surprises me, although when we first got there we got the " this out to be funny, look at the Lincoln boat its going to try to run looks", but on the first time trial when she blew the tires off through 1st and 2nd and still clocked a 13.1 people started to pay allot more attention.
That's why it surprises me even with the bottle high 11's low 12's is pretty dam good. I know I would be interested.

A 13.1? That's really interesting to me. Could you tell me what you have done to your car?

OK so here goes, 97LSC blk on blk, rebuilt engine, 11.3:1 comp, H beam rods, KB pistons, total seal rings, Cobra crank shaft fully balanced rotating assembly with ARP bolts, ported and polished heads with early run experimental ISKY split pattern grind cams, modified IMRC's, Cobra intake with split and cutback runners, 1/4" hat and 1.5" throttle body spacer, EV-6 Bosch 24LBS flow matched injectors, MSD coils, champion race plugs, under drive pulley's, Steeda timing adjuster, voltage stabilizer, and ignition ground straps, 180 deg. thermostat. And lets not forget one of those custom CAI's and modified MAS.
Stock exhaust manifolds, with some iron removed, 2.5" pipe X crossover no mufflers or third cat.
Rebuilt tans, Baumann stage 3 kit with 3.5K stall, as of this time 3:53 gears and lock, 93 drive shaft balanced, Had put in 4:10's but lost allot of midrange pull, so went back to 3:53's.
and allot of other small stuff I forgot;)
Oh yea Sniper commando tuned...........

Great ext. write up Infarc

Makes me want a x pipe.

Nice!!!

Are you pretty happy with the balanced 93 shaft?
Been debating if I should balance mine or just try to move it 90 deg a couple times to get it better.
I get vibration over 100 mph

To tell you the truth about the drive shafts, I have been lucky I have had 3 Mark VIII's a 94, 95, and 97 and have only had a vibration problem with the 95 above 110. I repositioned the shaft two times and basically fixed it. With the 97 I had planned on 4:10 to 4:56's and wanted to make sure I would have no issues at normal speeds. the 97 originally had 3:53's, I finally installed 4:10's and it lost allot of midrange pull so I went back to the 3:53's, she is dead smooth all the way to the top with the balanced shaft with only 1/2 ounce trim front to back.

In his book, Sean Hyland claims a 400hp NA rebuild on these engines (4v 4.6l). Have you dynoed yours, and if you have what kind of numbers do you have?

Cool...I will try to just index the shaft...its easy and its free.

I put down 282RWHP before I bumped the comp and re deg the cams, at that time I did allot of intake work, installed the rods and total seal rings. I have not had it on the dyno yet, but I got a hell of a but O meter increase and allot less traction:D So 400HP at crank is probably close.

I thank the cams I put in for the broad torque and HP curves, its nice to have a friend of a friend that knows someone;) they where never produced, I know a couple of other manufactures that tried split pattern grinds and never produced, probably because of the introduction of C heads did not make it cost effective.
If I ever blow it up or loose the cams I will be very unhappy :(

This seems like a practical engine rebuild to me. How is it as a daily driver?

Since then hes made 471 but that was using a velocity stack/8 t-body configuration.

lets hijack a non-hijack thread

Drives almost like stock:eek: well maybe not, Its my wife's car she drives it daily picks the kids up from school ect........
I have the idle set at 900RPM, hardly any lope almost sounds stock, the cams are very mild on duration and ramp with a good center-line on the primary grind so as long as the IMRC's function there's little cross flow at low RPM's but when them bad boys open all I can say is wow feels like a super bike in midrange to high end pull, with hardly any low end loss.
Due to the converter I have no low RPM creep and she wont transfer much to the wheels until 1200RPM other then that grandma could drive it as long as she doesn't mash the throttle:D

Sweet! :)

That would be a perfect build for the NE. Not that these things are snow cars by any means, but if you get caught out when it does, it would really suck if touching the throttle made things materially worse then it already is.

Weeeeellll... wow! I will be pulling the engine/tranny out of the donor car this year and rebuilding it with the intention of it ending up in my car, would it be too much of an imposition if I fired some questions your way when I start up that project?
