96+ Mustange GT calipers (PBR) on the Mark?

yeah I found it while searching for rear caliper info. I figure I should take this on this summer if funds permit. Plus I think it's a relevant and cheaper alternative for those looking for increased stopping power.

Ok I'm coming in on the tail end of the thread, If I wanted to swap out with out ANY modifications, what year make model front calipers can I use to put on my Mark for increased stopping power.

Without any modifications I would say nothing will fit.

What I'm proposing is take cobra calipers (with brackets), check fitment, drill and tap a new mounting hole and mount over stock rotors.

Mustange... sounds French, but I kinda like it. Pronounce it kinda like mustache and it sounds cool.

Anyway, it seems kinda pointless to me to redrill the brackets when you could just redrill some Cobra rotors... Yeah you'll need 17s or bigger, but hey who doesn't like nice wheels anyway?

you should be able to use 99+ pbr twin piston calipers & brackets with
T-bird rotors with out any mods.

There in Lies the problem..
I would have to convert from the stock MK8 Rims to Tbird rims... I dont like them.,..
Damn no easy solution....
Thanks
Bill

I have them on mine. They won't fit the stock rotors, They will fit stock t-bird/cougar rotors though, which is good because they are the same bolt pattern. You also need to grind down the caliper a little so it clears the spindle, otherwise when the pads wear down they will contact the rotors at all times. They grab much stronger though than the stock calipers.

Correction: I have 99+ PBRs. They are different from the 96s so I'm unsure of how the 96s will fit.

Ok, I'm confused.

The Tbird rotors fit with the Pbr's, and they have the same bolt pattern as our wheels.

Or not.

Which is it?

This speculation has me confused, also.

I'm going to PM a guy who has actually done it - see if he'll respond in this thread.

Edit: Sorry, didn't see that Battery had done it. Oh well, doesn't hurt to have another member who has done it chime in. (already PM'd him)

Sorry on my post I meant t-bird rotors not rims
And I have herd some people grind and some don't
To make them fit

Alrighty then.

To sum up: buy the GT Caliper and bracket, the tbird rotors, and you're good to go.

If that's wrong, smack me.

Question: there is usually a core charge for the old parts. Will they exchange the Mark VIII calipers for the Mustang's? Or are you screwed out of the ~45 bucks?

OK, so buying the gt caliper for a 99 and newer will be direct fit, the Bracket for same will be a direct fit and then rotors for same will be direct fit.

None of these will require any modification using the Stock MK8 Rims...

Seems simple enough, I would also say that Autozone probably wouldnt notice the difference in the caliper when you swap them out.... :)

Here's another point. When I put those cobras on my SHO I found out that the GT PBRs have phenolic pistons - the pistons have NO HEAT TRANSFER properties. This may lead to more fade than you're used to and possible rotor warping. A Good set of pads is a MUST!

You also may need to grind down a bit of the bleeder attachment to hake them work with the stock lines.

That having been said I briefly sold kits (2 or 3) containing everything you needed to swap over on the SHO and I heard nothing but good responses. This was 4 or 5 years ago though.

Look around for good used sets of calipers to avoid the core charge. They're plentiful.

I was reading on TCCOA about there being two types of PBR's - phenolic and non phenolic. Guys said you should get non phenolic ones.

Also: Banjo bolts. When you buy PBR calipers, do they come with banjo bolts? If not, do the bolts from the Mark VIII fit, or do you have to get specific (stupidly priced) ones from Ford?

I believe that you need new banjo bolts - M10x1 fine pitch. I don't think you need to get them from ford. I remember buying them years ago online for about $6 a piece.

we got the mustang PBR's on the thundermark, (95 bird, for you N00Bs) they were a direct bolt on, after you grind the lip down so the block on the end on the brake hose fits and, id buy used to make sure you get the banjo bolt

In addition to the 'how to' on TCCOA, there's this one: (can't vouch for it's accuracy until I try it, but it looks informative)

http://www.ehow.com/how_4782449_brakes-of-ford-thunderbirdmercury-cougar.html

Edit: That TCCOA should really change it's brake article title to PBR, not KVR, as the article discusses the PBR calipers! For the longest time I didn't click that link because I thought it was for some fancy caliper install.

I've actually wanted to do an entire swap... I have 1996 Mustang Cobra wheels w/new tires sitting in my shed waiting either to re-drill them to our Mark bolt pattern or swap to Cobra rotors/calipers. Is this a direct bolt on or are the bearings different?
