4R70W Transmission Question

In jerry's trans article, it specifically states not to use the longer ouput shaft of the towncar/police crown vic in high hp applications.

Actually it was torque that he mentioned, not HP. The information about this being behind a blown 450 HP was left out to begin with and still hasn't been verified by the OP but anyway, if it is going to be behind 450 HP, I'm sure the long shaft can withstand the torque coming from this. 480 ft. lb. or above, then no, I wouldn't use the long shaft. The worst that could happen, according to Jerry is that the shaft could either break or twist. My guess is that the torque from the 450 HP blown engine will be below 450 ft. lb., just guessing.

What's Roadboss at? 535 RWHP and 486 RWTQ

SVO, by no means do I think you don't know what you're talking about. I know you know your :q:q:q:q. My point was that for under $500, he could have a good transmission but if it's going to be dogged out at the track and making passes, then he should find him a 98 or 99 short shaft and do the electrical internal swap and j-mod, drilled out to spec for his HP rating. There is no way I would ever consider rebuilding a 93-97 trans. If a low mile 98 or 99 can be found and it's known to be good and can be bought for $350 or less, that's how I would go.

I have heard someone say they had a 2000 Mustang trans in theirs and I think 98 or 99 Crown Vic works but again, the internal electrical swap will have to be done or re-pin the harness and change out the speed sensor. I'm sure there are other cars that have the trans that will work.

I did that to XLRVIII's car, his first gen Mark

I done it on the 94 but I already had a 93 that was setting out and drained. I turned both upside down, side by side and had the internals swapped out in no time. Of course I done the j-mod first and put the valve body back in. It's really simple to do but to some, it looks intimidating if they have never done any of this before and I'll admit, it had me intimidated but now, I could do a complete electrical internal swap and j-mod in less than 2 hours easy.

Now I'm going to take that trans back out of the 94 and put it into the 95. As of now, nothing is wrong with the 95 but I can tell a big difference from the way the 94 felt with the 98 put in. The hardest part of the whole thing is the trans swap itself. When you have your car jacked up and on stands, it makes things tougher on you but if a lift is there for you and a good helping hand, it can all be done inna few hours or so.
