Got a trac lock to go along with a new set of FMS 4.10s and a master rebuilt kit with new bearings etc...

hopefully it will be done by Monday afternoon.

I hope I don't regret this on Monday night :shifty:
only fear is vibrations, not shifting right and speedo being thrown off.

The speedo gear will be needed for proper message center readings but not the speedo. You will LOVE it. It will shift fine and your MPG will go UP.

NEVER fear the gear.

I thought since Gen 2's are OBD II you're supposed to change it via a tune like with the SCT handheld tuner, or Sniper tune. I thought speedo gears were for non-OBD II cars.

that is what I was thinking as well

Another thing I can say is speedo gears are known to wear down whereas a tune does not. I saw first hand MANY speedo gears that were worn down. Made me glad I had an OBDII car!

You don't need any kinda reclibration for a gear change on a gen 2, you can't change it via tune either that's only possible on 99+ OBD2. All you do with a tune is raise and firm up shift points and take out the timing retard...

How come I was told that my SCT handheld tuner will change gear ratios on my car?

maybe in sniper, but in sct you change what is called the NV ratio
N=engine speed
V=Vehicle speed
it's N/V

get into third 1:1 ratio
note engine speed and vehicle speed
divide the engine speed by the vehicle speed and that is your NEW NV ratio.

the engine will shift at the same "speed" as before, but it will be at a different RPM than the stock gear.

If you do not change the NV or dont have access to the NV you will have to go "hack"/fudge your shift points to get them correct.

SCT didn't reverse engineer the "revs per mile" in the 97-98 PCMs because they "THOUGHT" only 99+ used it.

SCT doesnt realize that the M8 Platform in both EEC 4 and OBD2 form were test beds for stuff that was coming in later years.
The EEC 4's have obd2 stuff in there that were used in development.

AS we all know the 97-98's used a wheel sensor for speedometer, so the REVS PER MILE is DEFINATELY used.. but not accessible with the current SCT stuff.

WILL sct reverse engineer.. doubtful for an older platform such as this.

And for those that do not know, the '96 is OBD-II but it does need the speedo gear or a Speed-Cal when you change the gear ratios.
