Ok, neither one of these issues are a good sign at all. My car has 97,000 original miles so that's really low for a 93. I've seen my car's undercarriage, the engine, etc... it looks like it is no more than 8 years old. No rust, no grease, barely any dirt, etc... It was very well taken care of. However it appears today the skeletons start coming out the closet.

Engine noise:
When I started the car this morning, the first 2 seconds, I heard the valves knocking VERY LOUD until oil reached them. I'm not a freakin scientist but this isn't normal. I heard it inside the car wiht the windows up. I thought maybe it was a one time thing & when I started the car during lunch time (3 hours after initial start up) it didn't make the noise. So I was happy, I figured it would not happen again. 3 hours later when I'm leaving my office, I start my car & IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Same scenario, for about 1.5-2 seconds until the oil pressure reached the top. I had no choice but to drive to a client site about 8 miles away, then went straight home. I started the car about an hour later but it didn't make the noise again.

NOTE: Oil level is fine, oil is not burned, has about 1,000 miles on it.

Transmission (2nd gear slipping):
While I drove my car yesterday I noticed the tranny was acting a bit funny & today while driving to my client site I noticed it slipped from 1st to 2nd. As some of you know, this car is known for screaching the tire a bit from 1st to 2nd gear, well, it didn't it do it... rpm's went up a bit & it gradually rolled over to 2nd gear. It happened 3 times. Haven't used the car much after that but it hasn't done it again. I'm thinking of pouring some Lucas Tranny Oil into the tranny to remedy the situation until I can afford a used tranny. Any other suggestions?

Beleive that may be the infamous timing chain slap :shifty:, or try an anti drainback valve oil filter... someones gonna blast me for error i kno it....

Timing chain rattle-Alex the knocking noise is the timing chain thats rattleling. My Mark has 137,000 miles and it was doing the rattleling upon start up. I changed the oil to 5-30 semi synthetic motorcraft with the 820-s filter and the rattle is now gone. Make sure you use the 820-s filter, b/c it helps with building pressure so the oil gets to the timing chain quicker.

Tranny-get ahold of Jamie hes got trannies for real cheap, last I heard he was selling 97-98 trannys for 50 buck, thats 50 BUCKS!!!

I have 105,000 miles on my truck's 4.6 liter & I use FULL Synthetic. I think I'm going to switch to FULL Sythetic on the Mark as well. This is the oil the car came with. I have not changed it because you can tell the guy had jsut changed it. It was brand new. I asked him & he had told me he changed it about 2 weeks prior to me buying.

Are we using the same tranny's? Gen 1/Gen 2? I know our heads are diferrent, just want to make sure!

97-98 tranny should be ok, someone correct me if im wrong. Alex he also had a 93-96 for 150. Thats still dirt cheap for a used tranny. If i were you id get ahold of him right away. Hes close by over on Tarpon Florida you can even pick it up.

Yeah bro, im going to head over there one of these days b/c I need to pick up some parts. Also gotta take the car to my mechanic to have the a/c checked it has a leak. We have bought a pair of money pits but oh well, what can we do, we love em the way they are. They are like chicks, gotta love em the way they are.

I'll be crossing my fingers! I'm calling him tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully his price is competitive! It's a risk but I'm willing to take it as opposed to a tranny either from a junk yard, shipped from an ebay seller or the Tarpon FL guy you mentioned, even though he's within driving distance, he's still far! It's a long drive for a risky tranny! I'm well aware that anything used is like playing russian roulette. Hopefully I get it right the first time!

If Jamie has the 98 trans, GET IT!! All parts are updated in the 98 and you can't go wrong. He has it too cheap to let it go and he is not going to sell you any junk. I promise you that.

Timing chain rattle is a common issue...

Try this.

when you get into the car, press and hold the gas pedal to the floor while you crank the car for 4-5 seconds ( the engine wont fire, because holding the pedal down turns off the fuel injectors)
After 4-5 seconds of cranking, release the key, release the gas pedal and start the car normally.

The timing chain should not rattle because you have just primed the tensioner with this procedure.

Give it a shot.

you need to upgrade the 1-2 shift accumulator and spring.

This is also a very common issue with the early transmissions.

doubtful pouring anything/lucas into the trans is going to solve a known mechanical defect.

If the 1-2 accumulator piston and springs have not been changed out it is a rather safe bet that this is where the slip is coming from. A good writeup:

I like this! I like this very much! This is a whole lot better than replacing the entire tranny. I don't have the comfort to do this at home though. I'll talk to a buddy of mine to see if it can be done at his house but even under those conditions it would be quite difficult. We got the tools but we don't have the lift to get that car high enough to work comfortably. Darn it! I may have to resort to my local mechanic, he's the most honest mechanic I know but I have to pay a hefty price for his honesty!:(

labor on this should be right in line with "trans filter replacement".

After you pull the pan, and replace the filter.
You just use a large C clamp to compress the piston and remove the snap ring.

this adds about 12 minutes to a trans filter job.

If they charge you more than 150.. they are "bending you over".
