2003 Lincoln ls Transmission Problem

could have driving it with this problem now for about 2 months(no more than a 1000 miles) could have made it worse to the point where it looks like that one pic you had were it was full of filings and shavings(new trans)? or wont i know until i take it in or actually drop the pan myself?
 
It's gonna be $2000 either way for a reman or to fix the problem. If you are going to get it repaired, then make sure the shop is known and good at what they do. I'm starting to get this problem slightly. Got a full master rebuild kit, and I'm ordering new servos and solenoid this week. Just want labor charged on this rebuild.
 
i see what your saying..... so i take it in and the open it up and see that there is :q:q:q:q in the pan that says "hey this is going to need to be remaned its gonna cost you $2000" or they are going to say, "yep you need a new solenoid along with springs and serveros and it'll still cost you 2 grand"

so either way its going to be option 1 or option 2 and im still going to be out 2000 bucks....?
 
Yeah, so why not just get the parts needed and have them charge you labor. eBay is very forgiving, and only getting charged labor is better than getting charged an 150% price increase on parts.
 
so your buying all the parts needed for them to fix it and not reman it because youve just started having these problems... i should expect them to have to reman it because ive had these problems for somewhile now and have been putting on a total of about 1000-1500 miles.
 
If you take it to a shop, yes. If the trans needs a reman or replacement, you're out a lot of money.

If it just needs a new solenoid and fresh Mercon V, that's pretty easy to do on your own. Refilling the trans is the hardest part.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the 3/4 spring is a problem on the 5R55S/W? Just the N.
 
but along with the new solenoid and fresh marcon you have to do the spring and the servos, which still involves dropping the trans... which i think would be too difficult for me.
 
The spring is a $20 fix, it sounds like the solenoid is jacked. I'm doing a full rebuild because I want too. I think a new solenoid and fresh fluid should fix his issue.
 
if its just a new sloneoid and fresh fluid thats need they dont have to drop the whole trans for that which would make it a :q:q:q:qton cheaper right?
 
Yes, buy the parts yourself and go to someone else. I'd buy servos and anything else that was stated just to be sure.
 
Get the ~$830ish in parts and if you're near Cincinnati you can come to my garage. Pizza, beer, and shop towels will run ~$500.

This is easy to do.

The 5R55W is not known (to me) to have the 3/4 spring issue. The N and S have the potential to break/weaken.
 
but only the solenoid can be replaced without dropping the whole trans, so if i replace what was stated above theyll have to drop the whole thing which will be spendy
 
Listen to Mikey. Get the parts stated. I wouldn't just get the solenoid. I'd get servos etc. I'm doing a full rebuild, but that's because I want too. 207,xxx on the tranny and it's just now giving me trouble, for an american car is great. Toyota guy btw. I run a TH400 hydro-glide on my 2jz MKIII supra. The 5r trannies are not too bad for a tranny just the parts used in between Gens.
 
i think i might just do a full rebuild anyway to just because of the re-assurance and the the price is about the same too when your having the work done at a shop.

1. It's Mercon V, not marcon.

2. No, you don't have to do the spring and servos if you change the solenoid. It's just recommended since you'll already have the pan off and also because they're known weak points on the trans.

3. You don't have to drop the trans for any of this. It just makes it a lot easier.
 
No. A full rebuild at $2000 will not fix the servos and you'll still have problems. Why on Earth are you Hellbent on spending bad money?!

Get the damned thing fixed right.

The 5R55S and 5R55W are virtually the same. The 5R55N is different. The S stands for synchronous and the N for (duh) non-synchronous.
 
told you guys im pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff, but thanks for everyones imput!! everyone has been a great help.

If you're not mechanical this can be a daunting task. If you had a friend who had pulled major parts off cars like intake manifolds and the like you could probably do this at home with his help and people here. While it's optimal to do all the things noted, the solenoids and fluid change would get you going better for now.

Otherwise you going to have to pay someone competent to do this for a reasonable price. Realizing your strapped, one alternative is if you have a community college in the area with an auto mechanics program that is known to be good you might want to see about using them as a resource. Good schools / instructors won't screw up your car. But you will have to pay for the parts and fluid.
