Ok, I know I said I was done working on my viii for a while, but I've had some pretty cool developments occur that I can't pass up the oppertunity to persue.

I am picking up a 97 parts car that is all there electronically. What I am going to do is;

1 pull the 94 interior
2 modify the harnesses to accept full OBD2 compatibility for the engine.
3 install the charcoal gen2 interior.

I am going to attempt to keep the ECM as stand alone as possible. I don't really have to worry about the aux modules anymore because I am not running anything the car came with any more.

Should be an interesting project.

This thread will be used for pictures and updates.

This is about a 7 on a 10 scale on the hardest things I have done list.

looks like your in for some fun! if this is a 7 what is a ten? cuz for me this would be a 12 lol

If you want to get a Gen-2 with the look of Gen-1 - take a Gen-2 and transfer fenders, hood, headlights etc. - it would be a much easyer way. Anyway, you'll get a 3-4 years newer car...
Also you can do nothing with the rear lights - they look quite the same, not as the headlight, and realy can stay, IMHO.

at first i was like: wow , i would love to go obd2, then i was like: no effing way ,too hard,

Then i was like: well this is Mike,i have seen what he can do.

so ,now i figure you will do it "relatively" easily and piss us all off.

Mike, You want my entire interior. It is in excellent shape. I was going to do this very thing you are planning before I found my CE, I got the entire inter out including the dash. Be prepared to a lot of things are different.

Hmmmm.... you know Mike if you are going to use the 97 interior you should just do a full wiring swap...

I remember him saying ... I'll never swap an interior again ...

JD get the Expanding Foam ...

OK, I've missed the project car, sorry.
Can be done in like 2 weeks, every day after work & weekends. If the donor is OK, it will be like a puzzle: disassemble-assemble with new parts. Then test - and fin!
The only problem is that you want only ECU to be GEN2... it is quite tricky, Gen2 has a multiplex network with ECU integrated in it, maybe the only way will be to use all multiplex-connected electric units, incl. seats, steering column & door modules (that means that all the electric wiring from Gen2 must be transferred).

The ecu can be made to work with out the modules. But, the more I think about it, the more I think a complete wiring harness swap would be the way to go. I would only have to deal with the running lights and the stuff under the dash.

I'll keep the gen1 hvac system, and steering column.
