This is my first car with HIDs. I noticed when I turn them on, they flare up, very bright, then they fade back to fairly dim... then fade UP to their normal intensity. Is this a sign of dying lights? Is it a failure in the light/ballast, or a controller somewhere? Seems like it's specific to each light, because the drivers side light dims down more (before coming back up) than the passenger light.

Is this normal, or a sign that something is amiss? Couldn't find any threads referring to this. Would hate to get stuck out at night with some failed lights.

Thanks

Both lights do it at the same time?

Sounds like the 45-50,000 volts igniting and then cooling to whatever Kelvin you have

In other words, they're working perfectly

I was doing an edit just as you posted this. I just had my son kick the lights on while I watched, and the drivers light is worse than the passenger light.

When the switch is flipped the lighs:
-flare up immediately to very bright, not sure if it's highbeam-intensity, it's very quick.
-They then fizzle out and become very dim
-After about 1 or 2 seconds they regain their normal/necessary brightness.

Edit: Thanks!

Thanks for the input fella's.

I'm kind of disappointed. I've got a spare set (that I just plugged in and tried, same phenomenon), so when the existing set dies, I put the spares in, and I get to play with the dead ones.....

There's nothing disappointing about what the HIDs are doing. Mine and every other HID Mark8 does the exact same thing. That's the way the ignition cycle works on the HIDs and there is a gas inside that is being lit.

Have you ever seen a propane lantern before? That would probably be disappointing too. It's only seconds man. :p

Life's dissapointing dude but don't get so worked up about it. ALL HID's do this. It's almost like street lights, they turn on slowly & gain intensity.

It's dissapointing you just found this out now!:shifty:

I'm not dissapointed in the HID lights. I was looking forward to taking them out and cutting them up, as a project. I'm just too cheap to do it to lights that work, so now I have to wait.;)

Have you always been so disappointing?

Never trust a machine to finish your sentences... especially if it doesn't respect you.

Ummm what?

Anyway, don't go abusing your headlights with your science. They are pretty damn rare.
