i know there are a few of you out there redrilling to the 5 x 4.5 pattern, if your really cheap, as iam, what rotors will fit without getting into caliper changing, not that i wont do that later, but ive found quite a few rims that dont come in our bolt pattern. i thought the 98 cobra had the same rear, but i guess not. the prices on these rims are so low is the only reason im considering it. the other is get new and that was fairly expensive, redrilling just seems way cheaper.

Either redrill the stock rotors or elongate the holes with a die grinder....

Front hubs need swapped period due to the design, rears can be drilled.
 
My exact thoughts on just swapping the fronts and drilling the rears. Really have the itch for a set of summer tires on bigger rims but our selection is so limited it's just not funny :(
 
I still would like some real explanation from Ford as why they put 4.25 BC on some cars!! WHY!

I have yet to figure that one out too? I mean think about it, it is one more set of rims and hubs that must be made and added to parts lists :roll eyes:

For a billet set yeah but for all the cast ones they leave no room for that change these days.
 
Hubswap = winning

We are 5x4.25 because in the 90s the cars that had FWD offset by ford were using small pattern then stang (Taurus, volvo, etc)

It wasn't until 2005 that ford started using what use to be consinderd fwd offset on the RWD mustangs.

Hubswap and run the 05+ mustang wheels.

The best choice.
 
Ya that's a idea...I have a set already on my mark...could use the old 5x4.25 redrilled in my cobra IRS Would save me some $$$

Have to check with local machine shop and see what they would charge me
 
but then what, buy mustang rotors? will they fit>? eventually, yes i want cobra , or brembo , steeda, whatever.when i saw the rims i was looking for, allbeit i didnt want 20's but for 519 for the set of 4 and they wereonly 8.5 wide, but thatswhat one rim was costing. then i found a bunch more, CHEAP, but 5 x 4.5 not even offering 5x4.25 it was frustrating.now it seems the way to go.
 
For :q:q:q:qs and giggles I went searching craigslist for cobra rims and came across like 10 different listings for cheap (in relative terms) cobra rims..anywhere from 96-97 cobra rims (my fav) to cobra r, to 03/04 chrome cobra rims, to 99-02 cobras/GT rims most of which come with tires with decent tread and all were in the 300-600 range...which is WAAY cheaper than buying new off thecustomwheelshop website in our pattern which of course doesn't even factor in the price of tires yet..if I ever spend the money on any kind of mustang style rim it will be after a hub swap.

I'm still kind of hazy on what to do for the rears..most people post what the options are but don't show part #s or don't mention exactly what needs to be done to the caliper bracket if you use mustang rotors nor has anyone done a good write up with pictures.

So you have to swap the front hubs for any 94-04 mustang hub, run mustang rotors while still using the original calipers, I get that..but does anything have to be done to the caliper bracket on the front?

On the rear you can either re-drill your stock mark viii hub and have new studs put in, but this would require a hub centric ring correct? If not you need to find 99-04 cobra rear hubs compatible with the IRS we have. Also the only way to get around using cobra rear brakes (rotors and calipers) is to redrill a mark viii rotor to the 5X4.5 pattern as well as enlarging the center bore correct? If you go the redrilling your stock rotor route is there anything else that needs to be done?

AHH I just wish someone would make a kit for this..my god too much part hunting just to get a decent priced wheel!! uhhg.

1. re-use mark viii brakes. fits under 16" and up wheels.

2. buy stock mustang gt brakes. fits under 15" and up wheels.

3. buy whatever mustang brake set up you freaking want. 13" rotors, 14" rotors, 2 piston, 4 piston, 6 piston, whatever. possibilities are endless here.

something for every budget.

just take a die grinder to the stock rotors and make the holes a little bigger. everything fits just fine. stock brakes = free.
 
I am hub swapped. It isnt a bad swap. The hardest part is pressing on the bearing on the rear hub (went through 2 bearings on 1 side). The rear rotors need to be relocated (easiest to look on the TOCCA Forum, they have a ton of write ups on it. I definitely dont regret doing the swap but I already had the wheels sitting in the garage to use and it changed the whole look of the car. I know people say it is ok to redrill the rear hubs but I wasnt going to do that on mine. I bought mine for 195 for both rears and the relocation brackets for the calipers as well. Rotors were around $200 for all of them, front bearing around $45 each, front brakes $150 if you hunt for a while and the rear pads are stock mark viii pads. I did mine when a pad change was necessary so the upgrade was well worth it. If you have time to wait pick up a part at a time and swap them when you need to redo the brakes, the fronts are SIMPLE, if you have a jack you can do it without much trouble, the rears like i said need to be pressed in but overall wasnt that hard of a process.
 
this is one thing that blows about having a mark, not a big selection for wheels and hub swapping is really your only other option if you don't want what ever is in the 5x4.25 bolt pattern
 
Like gliby said the hardest part of the hub swap was pressing out the old rear bearings then in with the new (easy if you are set up to do it). I had a spare set of rear knuckels so I took them to work put in the bearings then did the swap.
 
I'll second the hub and brake swap. I've done it twice, it's worth it every time:

Considering the extra cost to get all the other crap redrilled and fitted into a kludge of a wheel/braking system, it's going to be a wash just getting rotors/calipers/brackets and installing them. Best of all, no machine shop labor... assuming Fred still makes brackets?

Once you've invested in that, the cheap world of mustang wheels is yours. In the end, you're going to have a similar investment between the two options, but the quality of the two results will be greatly different. Got for better wheels and awesome braking, save up and do the full swap,

That said, never pay retail. You should be able to find the parts used on Ebay or at the local yards.... but don't get used rotors. It's worth it to buy new bearings and brakes, though. Do it right, do it once. ;)

how much would it be to get another set rear knuckles and build them to the 4.5 bolt pattern and swap them on in a day? and what did you hubswapped people do for the front brakes?
