Hey guys, I'm Tommy. I'm new here, I live in So. Cal, I've got an 06 LS Black on Black, with factory Nav, and HID's, 17" chromes, and THX sound system. I'm looking into buying some rims for my car, and before I spend money on rims, I should probably know if they will fit. I don't quite understand the whole offset thing. I've been reading about it, But im not so sure I understand it fully. I was wondering if anyone can kinda dumb it down? I (think) know our offset is 60mm, but I'm looking at some 18 and 20 inch rims that have a 42mm offset. So since the offset is lower, will the rims be sunk back into the wheel well?
 
No, the lower the offset the more they will stick out of the fender well. People are successful with 18,19 and 20 inch wheels on the LS. List the specific details of the wheel, size, width, bolt pattern and offset and someone should be able to tell you if it would work. Also things like whether or not you are lowered or are planning on it come into play as well.
 
look for wheels with 5x108 bolt pattern... the size rim you get will determine what fits after that... IIRC +35 to +45 should be ok with 20" rims... but somebody please verify that first.
 
35+ is pushing it with 20.

Offset refer's to how far the hub mounting surface is from the center of the wheel. The higher the offset, the closer the wheel will have the hub mounting surface to the edge of the wheel, thus actually pushing the wheel in towards the wheels well once it bolts on.

A +42 offset is 16mm lower than the stock 60, meaning it's +42mm away from the center of the wheel, pushing out more once it mounts on the car.

This is why you can use 20mm spacers on a +28mm wheel to try and get a +48mm offset becaue you'll actually end up with a +8mm offset. To increase offset, you'll have to take away from the hub mounting surface, which no one really want to do.

Check out some oem wheels from other makes too, like jaguars, volvos, some ferraris, and even some range rovers( with high enough offset like 58, you can use on the ls with 20mm bolt conversion spacers to get a +38mm wheel). Basically, if the bolt pattern is not 5x108, but it has a high enough offset, you can make it fit, just like bullschmidt did with his range rover wheels.
 
Can anyone tell what he says at 1:47? That basically describes the "swaying" from left to right I get with my 19's. Did he say bump steer? Bound steer?

Bump Steer

At the risk of insulting you, if you already understand the subject, a simple explanation of bump steer is that if the geometry of all the front suspension components is such that there isn't proper harmony, when the tire goes 'up' (due to hitting a bump) the degree of 'straight ahead' of the tire will alter enough to make a slight steering change. This can be very injurious to the stability of your ride!

I searched it up on google so I have a general understanding of it now and thanks for your explanation of it too. Now to see if that's my "swaying" problem
 
I think you're swaying because you are taking corners like a tool now that you have all that extra HP boosted up!

Kidding, but perhaps your swaying is the rear toe links. I know if they are not aligned properly or seated firmly, you can easily sway back and forth - especially coming out of turns.
 
The rims I'm thinking about getting are KMC Rockstar Car. Not sure if I should get 18's or 20's. The 18's are 18X8, 5X4.25 OS: 42mm, BS: 6.15. The 20's are 20X8, 5X4.25 OS: 42mm, BS: 6.15.

I had swaying - even going straight, and the new toe links just fixed that (major difference).

Yeah but I get it when I'm cruising on a straight road. I'm going to check the suspension out, I just didn't have chance because I was in school, then when school ended the ls went straight to the shop.

There is a pretty big difference between 18's and 20's and the amount of tire you can use with them so it's all on you now since both sets will fit.
 
Clarification:

I had swaying even going straight... (it was the toe links causing it for me).
Left/Right steering response was also greatly improved today with new ES sway bar bushings.
 
When I replaced my toe links (eye balled the distance for alignment). I took a corner and floored it coming out of the curve, and the car's rear was swaying like mad (not the tires). This was on my way to the alignment shop, of course.

Sounds like this is definitely your problem Alax, did you ever re align after the springs/wheels?
 
Any idea what kinda tires I could put on the 20's? Would the ride change that much?

Any 245/35/20 should work. I'm running a 255 and rub at full lock. Watch out for pot holes and big bumps with a 35 series sidewall. Other than that the ride is fairly close to stock.

Yeah, next day had it aligned and I even went back a week later thinking the alignment was bad but it checked out good. I'm sure it's an easy fix, I just have to look, which I haven't been able to
 
i would also check the rear toe links, if they are warn they will have a lot of play in them and you will get a lot of swaying back and forth with that
