gives me gear shift error, check traction controll, engine temp error etc
try to turn it on 4 or 5 times it will start and run fine for a bit again

brought it in to my mechanic and he said it needs a new computer
its a 98 mark viii black on black and i love it.
Anyone have a spare computer or know where i can get one? none of the local junkyards have any
ty

I am sure someone on here has one. I just gave one away to a local friend that had the same issue. Fixed him right up.

I have one from a 98 Florida car. $40 shipped Priority Mail.

PM me if you want it and if not, that's ok too.

Did you check to see if there was a bad performance chip in it? Mine had same problems after I bought it and I checked and there was an old superchips chip in it. Removed that, problem solved.

Getting the computer out is a 3 min job + the 2 min it takes to disconnect the battery. One bolt holds it in place and then it slides right out with one big connector / harness plugged into it. Nothing at all to removing it.

I just have to take all the covers off the lower dash

If it's like the Gen1, there should be just one cover down there. I'll go look but I believe my cover is in and I'm still able to get the computer out. I just put it in not long ago and I know I didn't mess with a cover but I may have never put the cover in after doing the interior swap.

So does anyone know if I need to take this computer to the dealer to have it flashed?
Or will it adjust on its own

The way I explained it to him to be on the safe side was to install it (with battery disconnected) and then once he had everything back together, connect the battery and let it set for a min or two. Crank the car up and let it set there and idle for about 5 minutes. Drive the car normally for about 50 miles to give it time to adapt to his fuel and way of driving and maybe other stuff.

It shouldn't have to go to the dealer for anything. Not that I know of.

Have you had the alternator checked? Mark VIII's act very strange when the voltage gets low. My 97 had all of your errors when the Alt was crapping out.
