Looking at a 98 LSC tomorrow

Hey guys,

Tomorrow is the day I go check out a white 98 LSC with expectations of bringing it home if I like it.

This car has 105k on it but judging from the pics, it's a clean, unmolested car, white on tan interior.

What is a good price on this car with a clean Carfax? Right now the seller is asking $5000 which I think is reasonable if the car has absolutely no problems.

$5000 should be a PERFECT car. $3200 is more in line.


Does it have the moon roof? Heated seats? How are the ball joints? Sway bar links? Toe link compensators? How old is the air ride?
These are all things that should be new (except seats and roof) to command anywhere near that money.
 
This one has a sunroof as well. No heated seats, though.

The seller is not car-savvy as she says she hasn't had it that long. She doesn't know what's been changed. I will have to crawl around under the car and test drive it. However, since this is the first car I've ever driven with air suspension, I may not be able to tell if the ride is "normal", or sloppy, etc.
 
$5000 should buy you a 60k mile car. She is at least $2000 too high. There was a 59k mile and a 54k mile one for 4995 and 5495 locally in the past few weeks.
 
Jamie is about right on price, with over 100k in miles, and the crappy tan interior on Pearl, I would not go over 32-3500.00. If the air ride is inflated, there is no such thing as sloppy. It is either functional or it is not functional. You want to make sure you check the Upper and Lower control arm bushings, ball-joints, and tie-rod ends and rear. Take a look at engine bay for everything in place, check the courtesy center for any function alerts, and take it for a test drive and keep the radio off so you can hear the bumps and pay attention to the steering comfort of it. Also check for any fluid leaks under and around car. Check the condition of the fluids, ie, pull dipsticks and look and smell at it, check the radiator fluid color. All these things will tell you alot about the care of the vehicle. Check gauges for normal temps and pressures, and that they work. When test driving it check to listen for the air compressor kicking on and off.

Well sad news. I didn't buy it.

I checked the Carfax at the last minute and it had a "moderate" accident on the fender from 1999. It was virtually impossible to tell, and I was "all up in its grill", literally!

The suspension was just rebuilt and and I could tell during the test drive. Steering was as tight it should be; just needed an alignment.

It also had a few electrical gremlins. The power mirror adjustment button would not move in any direction except downward. Probably fault. The motor in the driver seat was not working so there was no way to adjust it back/forth. Gas lid button wasn't working either.

But no matter what condition the thing is in now, its Carfax has been tainted. Major turn off for me. I tried to haggle the price down to about $2900 but seller would not budge.

Well, time to continue on the search...
 
I wouldnt mind if it was done right and not major. But if he decided to sell it in the future it would scare away potential buyers as it did him. I was in a accident when i was a teen driving a cavalier. Turning right going about 5-8mph ran into a cargo truck on a snowy unplowed turn. I drove away but it needed a bumper/lights and fl fender. The truck had his wheels turned left ready for a turn and i just bounced off of it. It had no damage. So it could've been very minor but they still reported it..Mine was never put on a carfax.

As for the elec stuff, thats pretty minor..The fuel lever popper to the left of the filler prob just needed a squirt of wd-40. If you hear clicking when the button is pressed but the door doesn't pop then thats the problem.

The Mirror would prob be the little controller or possibly the mirror itself. Not a huge deal.

I mean for 5k it should be perfect with that amount of miles, but its a lincoln,13 years old and has alot of gadgets. If you know what your doing most are very simple fixes.
 
I payed $6200 for my 97 back on black lsc 4 years ago with 62k on it and even back then I would say I payed way too much, I wouldn't pay more than $4000 for one even if it was in perfect shape.

sbcaprice, you're right. Three years ago when I became unemployed, I was forced to sell my pristine 98 Cobra. I couldn't imagine what I could have gotten for it if it had a tainted Carfax. So same with buying a Mark with no accident history. I have to prepare to land on my feet if the same situation arises again, and it doesn't help that I am contractor (with no known end date) and not a full time employee where I am.

About all the other stuff such as the electrical and other small problems, I could've fixed myself, no prob.

Just a little frustrated that I could've of been driving a Mark right now :mad:
 
Just found a dark navy blue 97 LSC a few hours from here. I hate the fact that the ad in Craigslist lists no mileage or VIN info which is retarded on a dealer's part.

I didn't even know they made any blue ones and had to check online to make sure it was an option in 97.

Going to look into it some more. I am more partial toward a pearl white LSC but we'll see.

That Deep Navy Blue is freakin beautiful! I have only seen two in person and one was a pristine base with 30k on it and the other was beat to chit LSC.

It really is a killer color and is a close tie for my favorite Mark color. It was 97 only and they didnt make very many in LSC.
 
Laser, I think I'm really starting to like it the more I think about it. But there's ALWAYS a catch. They're asking $3500 for some reason... But if it's all good, I will buy it and make you soooo jealous.

Wont make me jealous. Two of its wheels are on backwards. :D
 
Sharp lookin car and good price if the miles around decent. What are the miles? If the miles are high i wouldn't shy away though. There lots of marks with less then 100k that look like crap compared to a higher milage, well takin care one.

The body lines look about perfect so it should be a sign that it hasn't been in an accident. The mileage on it is 103k.

I will jump on it if the Carfax is clear.
