Some of you might have seen my other thread about hitting a deer

housing on the HID is fine...lens is FUBAR

there's a halogen assembly on Ebay...does anyone know definatively if the HID internals will fit in a 2nd gen halogen housing

Its the same headlight just look at both of them.

all gen II headlights are the same shape because you can install oem hids on a vehicle that didnt come with them by swapping out headlights.

You have to open it up and swap the reflector too. The housing is indeed the same, but the reflector is very different.

You cannot simply swap the bulbs, you need the reflector as well.

I probably generalized too much on "innards" but was assuming that he would see that the reflectors were different and swap them out with everything but the lenses.

I think he was talking more about replacing the whole housing with a HID one on a vehicle that didn't originally come with them and the housing will fit

...
I thought i was pretty clear by saying headlight.

To you perhaps, but not to me.

Since the ToeCutter will have to cut the lens off to swap the reflector, he might as well just put the new lens on his old housing.

took a closer look this morning and the housing is cracked

looks like the whole assembly has to be replaced

still thinking about buying the halo housing and swapping in the HID innards (and reflector...thanx joe)

Joe has both halogen and HID (has 2 LS'), so he should be able to confirm or correct this.

I haven't pulled them out to look, so I can't say 100%. I believe they are since the housing itself has the same part number in the halogen assembly as it is in the HID assembly.

That's what I remember from a post long ago debating on whether or not the reflectors were the same. I think you even posted a couple of pics showing the difference. The purpose of those pics was to show the member who was insisting they were the same that they were in fact different - even though the housings had the same part number (which should confirm that the housing is indeed the same for both).

The reflectors are different, the housing are the same IIRC.

The mounting points for the reflectors are the same.

to the OP: Did you ever make the swap? I'm considering buying a damaged set for the swap of internals (full reflector bowl and bulb & balast swap) into my non-HID set.

I need to know if this works... maybe from someone who has had many pairs of headlights apart ***cough*** Alax7 ***cough***

Can he swap be done?

PM'd

Haven't done it so it's not 100% sure, but it does like it's you can swap them out

I'll be doing this later this week, so I'll confirm it by next Monday (if no one beats me to it).

Tru - who is finally gonna see the light (thanks Alex!)

Finally got done with my HID/Angel Eye install this weekend. Didn't get a chance to re-install the housings into the LS yet, and the car is filthy so I'm not going to take pics until she's cleaned up.

However, I did say that I would report today on whether or not a halogen housing could be used for HID's. The answer to that is "yes," but does require a little modification. It's also assuming that you are going to be and are capable of cutting open a headlight assembly (or know someone that can do it for you). Alax7's video and pics are pretty much all you need to get it done.

First off, the main reflector bowl needs to be swapped (one of the obvious things) - just requires some needle-nose or other pliers to squeeze the 3 plastic retaining posts to where the bowl mounts will slip past them.

Second, the high/low beam wiring harness needs to be swapped - including the external connector that connects to the car's harness. Once you have the plastic connector out of the HID housing, I recommend cutting/grinding/sanding the LOWER tab off of it before you put onto the halogen housing. It's easier to do, and once you connect the internal wiring harness, you cannot pull it back off so you'll end up having to deal with the whole housing at that point. The turn signal reflector bowl and harness can be left alone - they are identical between both housings.

Third, you'll need to cut an opening in the bottom of the halogen housing to allow the wiring harness from the ballast to go into the housing assembly. NOTE - I'd recommend this being the first thing you do after gutting the halogen housing. This is also pretty obvious when you have both housings side-by-side (or you'll see it pretty quick when you try to mount the HID ballast. I used a dremel and made the opening just slightly smaller than what was in the OEM HID housing.

That's pretty much it - definitely works so if you have a problem with your HID housing, just get a halogen assembly and use the guts from your HID. You'll have an easier time than trying to find another HID assembly.
