I have been qouted at a few shops when I had my rear gears done on my Broncos at a average of 500.00-600.00 with the labor cost here in SW FL from 45-60 bucks an hr. Just ended up doing it myself for frt and rr.

If I am not mistaken I believe the diff's on a Ford Ranger are interchangeable with Mark's; if so there is a 4.10 pumpkin on ebay right now.

I got quoted 600 just for the labor I have the gears and track lock in my garage. I've never even messed with chancing the rear end out let alone setting up a set of gears with a track lock.

I agree but that sounds steep...I did mine 5 years ago but I am not sure what it cost me...but he did my trans as well...only guy I trust... drove 500 miles to have that work done.

I have all the stuff. Just need to get it installed. I just don't want to pay $600.

If it is a reputable shop it is worth it...you might save a couple hundred shopping but if he screws it up it will cost you a lot more...maybe if you do a stall converter at the same time he will cut you a deal...

I remember one time I took the rear end out of my truck and took it to them as is, they cut my estimate in almost half due to the fact that they did not have to do any disassembly or up in the air work, mainly to save the man hrs to do the work.

thats what you should do greg, take a pumpkin to them , you could probably knock it down to 100 to 150

I charge 200 to do gears 250 if all new bearings in Mustangs. Mark8 would be more money for the added labor of the IRS. Like mentioned bring them just the pumpkin and price will be much lower. Best bet just buy another complete pumkin and have gears and posi put in that one and swap out on your own time. I bought complete pumkin for 100 bucks from bone yard.

Problem with that is the money you would of saved by taking his own pumpkin out of car to shop would be then spent on a used 2nd pumpkin. Then he is back to square one with no savings.

Not really if they charge him 200 to do gears plus the 100 for JY pumkin he is into it for 300 NOT 500-600. Also nice to have a stock pumpkin if you sell car you can pop it back in and sell 4.10 pumkin. I'm not FORCING him to do this just a heads up.

Also might I recommend you hit up FORD mechanics on there lunch break and see if any will do this as a side job if you bring them pumkin. Seen and heard it done.

Also it keeps car from being "down" you never know how long they will need pumkin for. If spare pumkin you can change pumkin in couple hours and be out motoring.

This isn't something most mechanics can do comfortably. It always seems like there is an old timer in the shop that would be your best bet to do it. Just because someone says they can set the gears up for you, doesn't mean it is going to be right.

I would hope you would NOT ask the Ford stock boy to do your gears. LOL
