i know it says to put premium in the lincoln ls but do u guys ever put mid grade or lower in cars and if so have u had ne problems with it (2000 ls v6)

I know some guys do but personally, I don't.. Shell V-Power 93.. Technically speaking, you are doing damage to the engine because our engines are high compression; meaning it needs the higher octane..

Why does this keep coming up? The LS calls for 91+ octane for a reason. If one can't afford the ~$.20 per gallon premium then they bought the wrong car!

For you drinkers: Would you buy the cheap stuff were the price difference so little?

My logic is why risk messing something up to save a couple of bucks? And in my experience, when there's been lower than premium in my tank( bc my mom filled up my tank w/o asking me ) my car ran like crap and I even got The check engine light on.

So don't be cheap with your car :D

Ohh and I wouldn't be pissed about that.. Except if she used the wrong gas but I would buy octane booster to take care of that.. $3 or $40? Hmmmmm.. lol

Yea I don't understand how people are sweating over a couple dimes more per gallon...

It always feels so good to know your putting the best stuff you can in your car. Quit worrying about your wallet when it comes to gas, otherwise you'll just build up some stress. Of course, many worry too much and start killing each other to get to the cheapest gas station.

This again...

Some people REALLY shouldn't drive cars they can't afford fuel for.

Why do do people step over a dollar to save a dime?

On average premium is 10 to 15 cents more expensive than regular.

Lets have us a little math session.

We'll use rounded numbers for the slower people.

Say that your car will average 20 miles per gallon over the span of 100,000 miles. That gives us 5000 gallons of fuel used for that 100K miles.

At $3 a gallon for regular unleaded, that comes to $15K in fuel.

At $3.15 a gallon for premium, that comes out to $15,750.

We take the difference of the two, and we end up with $750 extra over the course of 100K miles.

At an average of 15K miles, a year, that breaks down to to 6.67 years to put 100K miles on that car.

We take this extra $750 and we divide that by 6.67, and we end up with 112.47 extra dollars a year in fuel costs.

Now you tell me, is this $113 (rounded up) worth upwards of what, $2000-$3000 dollars to replace your engine because it went south due to constant detonation?

There is a reason why these cars require premium. Otherwise FORD would have recommended regular unleaded in these cars. Will your motor absolutely bomb if you constantly run regular in it? May so, maybe not. But think of it as an insurance policy.

Yes, the car can adjust to regular unleaded. But you also won't get the fuel economy the car would get if you were to run the required premium fuel. Lets not talk about what happens when you put your foot into it. We've already discussed how much an engine can cost to replace after you bomb it.

A lot of people seem to want performance, but don't want to pay for it. They abuse their cars, and when they break, they cry out about what a piece of crap the car is, because all this stuff keep breaking. Well DUH!

So you go ahead and run regular unleaded in your car. When the engine blows up and you can't afford to replace the motor because you didn't want to spend a measely extra $3 at the pump because you had to get your $2 twelve ounce bottle of Evian and then you junk it, there will be more junk yard LS's for other people to pull parts off of.

IMHO, if you can't afford the gas it calls for, you really have no business owning it.

I buy 100 Octane at lower elevations. Why? Because that's what the motor is tuned for. Personally, I don't like replacing 70K dollar motors because I skimped on a few dimes (let alone the extra $3.75 per gallon for 100 test) at the gas station. Now, an LS motor is obviously nowhere near 70 grand, but you get the idea.

This is what it costs me to fill up 3/4 of a tank (I don't like running a car below 1/4 or so) every few days.

Am I bitching? No. I know what I was getting into when I bought the car. I didn't buy the car and then bitch and moan about how expensive it is to run.

Wouldn't dream of putting anything less than premium. Matter of fact, how many times have you been putting gas in someone else's car and automatically hit the 93 octane? Like DAMN I could have save a few cents for once.

the sticker on the gas door is just like a stop sign, you can choose to follow it or not, the choice is up to you, but don't be surprised when the out come isn't as cool as you expected

Frogman, you fill up on 100 octane on your DD or when you hit the track? How long did it take you to type that essay

Math FTW! Premium only, 91 though. I wish we had 93 here.

$100 for a DD is insane.

I dont care if im making $100K a year thats $400 a month in fuel. The less money i give to those fools in the middle east the better.

the math even gets better when you realize that the car will actually get worse mileage with lower octance, since the knock sensors are pulling timing. so for 5% savings at the pump - if you lose more than 1mph then you have actually lost not saved.

never use low octane!

during the gas shortage i HAD to use mid & low octane gas just to get by, very poor running engine, always use high octane gas

the only thing that is insane, is trying to under stand why someone would buy such an expensive car and then think that the engineers that built it and put the sticker on the door had no reason for it.

(edit: i guess i do see that now that the used prices for this car have fallen so low that even dumb high schoolers can afford it, people can easily afford the car but not afford the gas, damn that depreciation)

EASY!!! lol I did buy the car when I was in HS, but almost always used 93.. I did have to use 89 a few times and try to mix to keep 91 just to get by..

Now that is all I use
