I have this newly acquainted friend with a 99 Cobra. Very nice car, original owner, bone stock. I take him for a ride in my Mark VIII and he was hooked, had to get himself a blower. Hes hit me up over that last couple weeks on different kits hes found and I figure out whats needed and if it will do what he wants. He locates a complete 03/04 Eaton setup for $1200! Thats a steal!

I call the guy selling it and make sure it has the pump and bridge pulley and all that stuff. Sure enough its a complete kit with injectors and pumps (fuel and inter cooler) and is on a Mach1. He also tells me he had to make an adapter for the IAC because he hollowed out the upper plenum for the single blade throttle body. BTW, he wants $250 more for the throttle body.

So I tell my friend that all he needs is an 03/04 timing cover, 8 rib pulley for the alt, new upper plenum and some EV1 to EV2 adapters. I tell him $450 and I will do the complete swap for him. Tell him don't buy the oval t-body cause it causes more trouble then its worth.
He says that the seller will install it for $150. I reminded him he gets what he pays for and I cant and wont match that price, bring it by after its done.

He calls to tell me that the car don't idle, squeals like crazy and throws its belt. Yeah, seen that coming.

Since he has severe wheel hop he wants me to do the almost full Delrin rear bushing setup. Also gonna install a pinion brace and cover brace. I also pointed out his many issues and discussed how much more I am gonna charge him for corrections.

So here is just some of the goodness.

In this picture you can see the hacked IAC setup. No longer on top of the plenum but just hanging behind the throttle body with some plate welded in the IAC holes. Then on the 3/8" hose there were 1.25" clamps so there is a couple inches of extra clamp just hanging there in three places. Then notice how there is no way to get vacuum into the PCV setup cause its been replaced with open filters.

Here you can see how much the guy hacked up the crossover tube to fit. There is no longer any support for the center section of the crossover tube. Nothing to hold the tube together other then the rubber hoses.
Then you notice the 6 rib belt on the 8rib pulley. Thats cause the car throws 8 rib belts. Turns out the reason is the crank pulley is not seated all the way I believe.

So wondering why the crossover tube was hacked and also wondering what that big thing was jammed into the surge tank I went to the other side to take a closer look.

Yup, thats the alt flipped around and rigged in place on a home made bracket! There are stacked washers on the alt and the tensioner to position them in line. That places a pulley right where the crossover tube needed to be so thats why its hacked. There is now a smooth pulley on the alt since its spun around. The alt is slipping like crazy on the belt. He didn't put the 03/04 cover on and relocate the alt like he should have and now there is this ugly setup on there.
I also notice loose wires and a relay screwed in the fender. Curious, I see they are for the inter coolers pump. The pump is now switched with ACC so even if he just wants to listen to the radio, the inter cooler pump is running.

Then looking closer at the alt I see its pressing into and collapsing the other radiator hose against the surge tank.

So I see all this and point it all out and now he feels like chit cause had he brought it to me it would have been done right. Now its gonna cost him more, look worse and he has to buy a smaller surge tank. I kinda feel bad for him but when someone says $150 to install a blower and fuel pump, ya gotta know its not gonna be top pier work.

Please people, check your friend or shop before you do mod work. Hacked stuff is just no fun. His car could have looked like a Terminator under the hood. Instead it looks like cobbled together some parts and made them work.

I would rather not have a blower, than have THAT...I could piece a blower setup from a salvage yard and it would look better than that...what a hack job..who did this ? RC?

The system works so I guess nothing is wrong with it.

It don't idle and thats cause of the hacked IAC setup.
The alt slips and will always slip cause it has a smooth pulley and poor belt wrap.
The intercooler pump runs in ACC mode and that can cause it to drain the battery
The rad hose will get a hole worn into it cause its pinned by an alternator bolt.
The crossover has nothing other then an oring holding it together.

So only minor esthetic's. The rest is keeping the system aligned and not half assed.

Bill,

You may not agree with me here, but I like the IDEA, of the alt location. I'm not too thrilled about the execution in this example, but could you get me some better pictures on how he did it? I am still considering slapping the M112 I have on my new engine, but need some ideas on alt routing.

I'm sure I could do a MUCH better job fabbing a bracket and could actually get this thing off the ground. HRM.......

Mike you got the pics of the brackets made for the marauder crowd a while back ? I've got all the info here, but you know what I like ;)

Alts aren't supposed to have smooth pulleys...especially when they are no longer on an NA car

No I Don't J, but I was just thinking; I'm not putting a different hood on it, so a PD blower is out.

I'll stick with what I was planning.

Ill have the car here next week for repairs and rear end stuff. Ill use my real camera and get you some better pics.

But if you spin the alt around dont you have to use the smooth side of the belt to keep the alt spinning the right way? Never looked close at the KB kits for the 99/01 that spin it around. It would work if it had more wrap around the pulley but his only contacts maybe 30%.

My big gripe is the crossover tube. I told him put a single tack weld on it to hold it together till I figure out what I wanna do.

Gonna find him a smaller Canton coolant tank to stop pinching that hose and then carve up the hose so its runs better.

Oh.... Tell your friend, that I have a 8000 mile, never pullied cobra 112 that I will let go for 125. Needs a snout kit because I pulled it apart to measure it all and put into inventor. It is put back together, but will need the kit for the front seal.

heard you might have another new project J.

and i thought my cobra intak setup on the lincoln was kind of half assed. i bet, not knowing anything about these cars, could have done a better job than this jack wagon

What a fugged up day! Yay!!
The Cobra was dropped off last night so I could work on it today. As I was going through all the parts I see a big box that shouldnt be there. I open it up and see its a subframe bushing kit but dont see any subframe to diff bushings. Turns out he forgot to say "diff" when he ordered his parts and got the subframe kit instead. I told him no freakin way I am installing them for what I quoted for the othe bushings (which was way way too little anyway) and if he wanted them installed it was gonna be another $500 cause I really didnt wanna do them and if I did do them it was gonna be WAY worth my time. Fortunatly he said he will return them for the other bushings.
Wish I had them now though cause I am installing a 03/04 IRS brace that has the diff mounting points and have to remove his bushings anyway. Oil well.

Doing the rear end stuff on the Cobra today and was fought all the way. Was compressing the rear springs and as I was pulling the spring out the compressor partialy slipped and jammed my thumbs between the spring and LCA. Owwwwwwwiiiieeeeeeeeeeesssssssss!!!
So I am sitting there on the ground with my thumbs stuck to the car and nobody around. :( I wish I had a camera for the next set of wonderment. I kicked off my shoe and grabbed my 1/2" drive wratchet and managed to flip it up to hang from the spring. I then used my other foot to push it through the spring but aint too flexable so couldnt push it far enough through. So I bent down more and grabbed the wrench in my teeth and pulled till the handle dropped down (which hurt like a mofo and almost knocked out my teeth) and I nudged it under the spring by my thumbs. I used my chin to press down on the wrench but slipped and got a blody nose and my eyglasses knocked across the car port. :( I tried again and managed to get my left thumb out and then use that hand to free the other. I cant believe my thumbs didnt break. Only broke the skin on the knuckles and they hurt like hell but still work.

Anywho I got the spring compressor back in place and finished up then poped out the LCA bushings. What a freakin pain! Got the new Delrins in and ran into the next problem. He had such severe wheel hop that the LCA mounts were twisted and bent a little. Dont notice it cause the rubber bushings have compliance and you can get the arm in there. With the Delrins there is ZERO give and you see all the mounting issues. So I got that all tweaked and together for the most part. Shimed the Delrins and then pulled it apart to lube and final install. Was supposed to be done today but got set back too much with issues.
Still gotta install the cross brace, diff brace, fabricate an alternator brace, hook in the PCV filter kit, align the superchargers pulleys better and clean up some other issues from the guy that installed the blower.

Sure is a nice car though. After his tune hes making 416rwhp on 8psi.
Also now that I played with the Delrins I really want some for my LCAs! Never knew how much deflection could be eliminated with these things!

The MM kit came with the handy dandy removal tool. Still a royal pain thogh! Cant use an impact and the tq required to pop those bastages is insaine!!

Another wondermus day on this fuggin car. I spent several hours trying to get the control arm in on the passenger side and just cant get the mounts to line up. After laying under the car to position stuff I see a wrinkle in the floor pan with rust on it. I see another wrinkle in the trunk and a broken re-welded gas tan strap. This cars been hit from behind. I bet the IRS sub frame is tweaked not allowing me to slide these solid bushings in.
So I call the owner and inform him of the issues and I guess he misunderstood me and thought I drove it and got it rear ended. I showed him the damage and what was holding me up. Turns out he had no idea nor did his brother (person he bought the car from) that the car was ever wrecked. The brother bought it in 2000 with a salvage title. The broker told him the car was stolen then recovered after the owner was paid off already. He had it inspected at a Ford dealer to be sure and they didn't find any of the stuff I found. Kinda felt bad telling him his car wasn't salvage titled because it was stolen, it was salvaged cause the car was totaled. :(

So I made sure the spring compressor was on right this time.

Got it all out nice and easy:

IMGP0066.gif

Then you need several hundred pounds of force to pop teh damn bushings out:

IMGP0067.gif

Sure would be nice if I could get the bastage back in. Since I am waiting for some help I just went ahead and cleaned up some issues under the hood and installed the diff cover brace..... well except one bolt. Gotta drop the diff to get the bolt in the hole.
