OK Need Trans Guru ASAP.

My DD, decided it wanted to throw a fit today..
I have had no major issues, today however, coming to a stop, it started to go into neutral, then it jumped back into gear, I got to work, check the fluid, it was a quart low, probably from the dipstick o-ring, anyway, I add it, take the drive home, 48 miles one way each trip. anywho, on the way home I go to pass someone and it did a neutral drop hit gear and tore the tires apart,
Get home check fluid, its proper level, and when I shift from drive to reverse, its got a second delay, then engages, going from reverse to drive same thing I was under the impression its normal.
I'm concerned about the big neutral drop,
Could this be a solenoid? if so which one would cause this? TC lock up Solenoid?
line pressure? or shift pack?

Oh one more thing, there is very slight whistling sound it seams when I shift from gear to gear D to R or R to D normal?
I may have access to a trans out of a 93 if he still has it, what do I need to transfer over to the new trans to make it hook up to my 96? or is it a straight up swap?

Ok, just my opinion but I would swap out the TCC solenoid and the line pressure solenoid. Also, if you haven't done that J-Mod yet and you are wanting faster engagement with the gears, then now is the time to get out the cordless drill and bits needed and buy the two gaskets for the valve body.

If the 1-2 accumulator and springs haven't been done, I would also do that too. If it hasn't become a problem yet, it will.


Remove two bolts and unplug. Swap it out.

Swap out. It just prys up or can be done by hand after removing the bolt obviously.

Line pressure solenoid is time consuming but not hard to do.

Remove that pin you see above and keep up with it.


The pressure solenoid will come out by hand once you have the gear selector out of the way.

Tensioner has to come off to get the gear selector back out of the way.

Once all of them have been swapped out, put it back together. The 1-2 accumulator and springs, if they have not been done yet can be done anytime. While you're in there though, I would go ahead and get it done but it seems like you did this already. You'll need about 5 quarts, maybe 6 to refill after the pan is back on and you should be fixed.
 
What gear did it drop from and to? If I do one of those drops where she hits just the top off first she'll do that I have learned to do a manual dump if necessary. But fourth to first is a no-no. And low fluid in this car can be bad.
 
Dan is messing with me. Take the MLPS off before attempting the gear selector. :p

I can't set here and list all of this stuff one by one in my head. I forgot to mention, I'm not a guru too. :shifty:
 
Yeah, could have been but honestly, I wouldn't swap out and install 17 year old parts, especially the MLPS. Go new for sure on that like chicken is suggesting. Call Maxx or check rockauto and get real OEM parts to go back in. A lot of stuff is updated now after they figured out what was good and what wasn't.

Anyway, on my way into work this morning, the car only when coming to a stop, seems to grab neutral for a second, you can feel it grab 1st when at a complete stop...
Is there an easy fix of is the trans wiped? I have read the above posts but was hoping to find a single point of failure.. I.E. Solenoid. or is it just the bad news of a toast trans.

Bill, did you ever change out your 1-2 accumulator and springs? It kinda sounds like that might be the problem or possibly the TC might be playing out on you. I would go ahead, if you can and swap out the three parts and do the 1-2 and change out the MLPS. Put the pan back on, refill and see what you have. The 1-2 and springs and the MLPS is what will cost you. Should be under $100 and if it don't fix it, you can always take those parts back out for the next trans that goes in.

No as far as I know its all original, You think the 1-2 accumulator, or the TC is going? The Tc will be the most of a pain in the Arse.

could that instead of the TC actually going bad, just be the Solenoid for the TC lockup? is that what you were referring to or the actual TC.

The actual TC is what I was referring to. I'd just swap over to a 98-00 trans and change over all of the electrical internals and J-Mod while it's out. You'll be a happy man.

It really could be the 1-2 accumulator. It might have a broken spring in there, maybe both.

If you can get the 93 solenoids free, go ahead and drop the pan and swap them out, reinstall pan and fluid and see what it does. That will only cost you time and eliminate what you might think it is and could also fix it. I just don't feel like it's a solenoid.
 
OK update, Something changed...

I tried something today, now on the highway its fine, I never come out of gear.. but as soon as I make a turn or come to a stop, its happening more frequently..
It will go to neutral for a second or two.

I tried something different today, I turned off OD and was driving normally..
Question is, When the OD is off, does this stop the TC from unlocking or locking, and could this prove the TC solenoid is actually bad?

It has not dropped to neutral since I turned it off.
