Ok - I am going to smash it I swear. The more I listen to and hunt for this problem in my engine the more I notice the obxious ratcheting tensioner.

Can I replace this easily with another OEM piece? Do they all ratchet!?!!

Its going to drive me NUTS!!!

Primaries are easy, secondaries are not.

Are you sure thats what it is though?


And this is what I mean by easy.

Remove the belt
Pull off the crank pulley
Pull off the power steering pulley
Remove the PS resivoir
Remove a bajillion bolts
Pull timing cover off being careful not to dammage the VCs gaskets
Use a clamp to GENTLY snug the guides together
Unbolt old tensioners
Bolt in new tensioners
Remove grenade pin and dive for cover.... just kidding... but remove the pins
Scrape off gasket maker on the heads seams
Install new timing cover gasket
Put gasket maker on the heads seams
Carefully position the timing cover back on and dont pull out the VCs gaskets
Bolt everything back up
 
That metal part with the "L" on it is the tensioner for the left side. If you look at the chain guides rail you can hold both rails in position with a C clamp so the chain dont move when you replace the tensioner.

RoFL....if he doesn't know where or what a booster is...do you honestly think he has narrowed a noise down to a timing tentioner...I think he means the serp belt tentioner
 
Oh! The motors internal tensioners are ratcheting, not the acc drive tensioner. Thats just spring loaded. What kind of noise is it making? If its a chirp or squeel then it just needs a new pulley. About $15 at O'Reillys (sp?)

Its a ticking... like a ratchet.. god the more I stick my head under here the more annoying it is!! heres a video from when I tried to find the idling sound, but its not all that clear.

There is a ticking, which sounding like fuel injectors or something (what the F do I know) and then theres the ratcheting... enjoy

Engine appears to be running right. That sound is bearing noise. It may be alt, may be water pump or it may be one of the tensioner pulleys. It may even be a worn out belt.

Check the belt to see if there are any cracks at all on the grooved side. If so, replace it.

To check the bearings you need to remove the belt and just spin the tensioner and idler pulley by hand. If they are not perfectly smooth or if the wobble AT ALL then they are bad. If they are good then spin the alt and see if its smooth. If so then spin the water pump (above the crank, below the alt) and see if it makes the noise.

Your video didnt help me to try and pinpoint it.




EDIT: Watching the video a half dozen more times I heard an unusual noise right before the video stopped. Could you go back and make another video? This time hold the damn camera still and go from the front of the motor, not the side. Get the camera lense close to the alts snout and hold it there for a good five seconds then move the camera down by the tensioner and hold it there for at least five seconds. Then back away from the motor holding the camera about 3-4' away.
 
Or!!! Take some vacation...drive to Texas, let us look it over

If you are talking about the high pitch clicking, its the phones mic making the ticks Im talking about seem louder.

I didnt get a chance to take pics last night, but I will certainly tonight, and Ill make a video like you asked- Im hoping to have some sunlight since my garage makes too much of an echo. I dont think its the pulleys or the belt (its fairly new) but hopefully my next video has more distinct audio.

Ohh and Sapp.. I would, but at the 16-18MPG im getting now, it would cost me way more then just fixing it locally.. however I think a couple 30 racks and a few trips to a local scrap yard we could fix everything on it!

I might have gotten carried away, sound is still tough to distinguish but you can hear the ticking from whatever it may be(Fuel injector?Busted valve?) something clicking when im at the throttle.

Let me knwo any/all thoughts! Thanks!

Holy crap that is one rediculously loud IAC!! I assume that clicking/ticking noise when you had the camera at the center of the plenum is what you are referring to? Thats pretty bad. Remember when you thought I was being mean to you and said to check your IAC? Yeah, check your IAC. That motor looking thing with the plug on it thats on the very center of the motor on top. Start the car and unplug that plug and see if the noise stops. Thats also your idle problem.

Your other idle issue is that leaking PCV gromet and prolly valve. Go to a parts store and tell them you need a new grommet and PCV valve for the passenger side. The Gromet is the same but the PCV may be different.... I forget.

That should get rid of your ticking and idle issue as well as the hanging RPMs.

Thanks! I hope you are right - Its a loud tick, Im going to replace that and the gromet. Im guessing I cant just leave it disconnected right? How much should I expect to pay for one/ I saw for other models its 50 bucks

I still think there is another source for the "ratcheting sound" since its coming from lower (or more internal) on the motor. Let me eliminate the surface ticking and then see what I am left with.
 
It will prolly stall. I forgot to tell you to ever so slightly to push on the throttle body to keep it runing.

OK, disconnected it, still heard the ticking.... I had enough commonsense to keep on the throttle every now and then. but it did end up stalling. I checked every hose/connection/etc.. No leaks, and still only really when brake is pushed. I did spray a ton of MAF cleaner into the intake and that did help a little bit so maybe I need to do a bit more cleaning tomorrow when i change the plugs.

Tell me, should the PCV on the passanger side have oil in it?
 
Huh, im stumped then. In your video it sure did sound like the sound was dead center on the motor and I have heard IACs make that noise too. But if you unplugged it and it still ticked then I guess thats ruled out. Wish I could hear it in person.

The PCV valve will have some oil on it but shouldnt be saturated. Thats what happens when the check ball inside sticks or if the gromet is leaking.

what ball!?!?!? There didnt seem to be anything in this,,, it was just a bent piece of plastic. ill tear it apart again today when i change the plugs and clean off the coils and bores.
 
Clean and replace, clean and replace....fun stuff isn't it!

If you run out of things to clean...I've got a set of IMRs that could use some scrubbin'
