Oil pan location?

Since it sounds like this is your first oil change on the LS, be sure to check if any of your oil filter wrenches fit. The filter is in a tight spot and most filter wrenches either don't fit or you can't get enough room to turn the handle.

On my LS I have the easiest time using one of those "cup" shaped wrenchs that fit on your 3/8 inch ratchet and slide over the end of the filter.

I have a collection of wrenches, straps, you name it, that I collected over the past almost 40 years ofc changing my oil and NONE of them fit. The cup type fits right on but it is not a "One Size Fits All" so buy the one that fits.

Yah don't want to be surprised with an empty crank case and a stuck filter.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

What year is your LS? V6 or V8?

The filter on my 04 V8 is very easily accessible and can be taken on/off with bare hands... Then again I do use these:

On my '04 and '06, I couldn't use a cap-style filter wrench--there wasn't enough clearance. The strap-style wrench that I've used on all of my FL400a-equipped Fords fits quite nicely, though.

OMG! Don't ever use a Fram filter on anything! If you don't know why, google fram filter problems and read. They are the biggest pieces of useless crap ever made!

They have worked fine for me... In fact I put 2 trips totaling 2k miles on a fresh oil change/filter in just last month. No problems.
