Okay. I had to do it. I feel that I've been insulted by 1bad4.6l on http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=64686 this thread. This is what was said:

And this was my reply:

I've got no problem with the term "shade tree mechanic". Back in the day, that meant that you worked on your own vehicles in your own yard under your own "shade tree". The term refers to a person who doesn't mind working on his own car and getting his hands dirty. I am a "real" mechanic. Have been for 20 years. And I'll call myself a shadetree mechanic all day long. Both my grandfathers were shadetree mechanics. My father is still a shadetree mechanic. And so am I. And proudly so.

So I'm wondering if there are any other so-called "real mechanics" around here who have a problem with the term "shadetree mechanic". Personally, I don't. But that's just me. I'd like to hear other opinions. That statement just rubbed me the wrong way.

This coming from the guy with slime in his bags. Don't get your feelers hurt. Sorry if you feel insulted by the way I and many others view this term. I on the other hand would not let a shadetree mechanic touch any of my vehicles. There is a difference between the right way to fix things and "making it work".

I guess like a few others here I am also a dick!

So, even though I'm not a 'mechanic' and I work on my car, I'm not doing it right?

I'm just 'making it work'?

Interesting concept, that....

And also if you have the rebuttle of I had to fix it for the time being. I had to coil my garnett glaze 95 due to lack of funds a few years back. There is a right way to do things.

Did I say YOU were doing it wrong? No. I said there is a difference between the right way and MAKING IT WORK.

Yep. The guy with slime in his springs that stopped the leak and gave me a few more good miles so I can save up the funds for new springs. Sometimes you have to "make it work" until you can do better. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If your solution produces the desired results, that is. Which, incidentally, my solution did.

Now you don't;) I was merely perterbed by the mark owner with the slime bags who is recomending it to other members. Search fixaflat and see how many threads like it have been blown out of the water. :D

If you are referring to me, I never "recommended" that solution. I simply stated that it worked for me. I also said that it's probably not the best idea in the world and if you do try it, do so at your own risk. As for Fix-A-Flat, I wouldn't even put that stuff in my tires.

All I have a problem with is the term "shadetree mecanic" being used in a derogatory fashion. There's nothing wrong with it. Anyone who does his own work in his own yard is technically a shadetree mechanic. I am. And proud of it. A lot of people wouldn't know a lug nut from a radiator cap. And I question what "real" mechanics are learning these days as well. My stepson has been in Auto Tech class at his high school for two years and still doesn't know what a radiator cap is. And he's passing! I'm glad to be a shadetree mechanic. A friend of mine took his '98 Expedition to a shop recently to have an engine knock checked out. The mechanic told him that the lifters had leaked down and bent some of the pushrods and that's what was making the noise. When he told me that I just shook my head. His Expedition has the 5.4L SOHC V-8. It has no pushrods to bend. If that's the state of our local mechanics, then we need more shadetree's!!

I saw a fixaflat Mark8 bout a month ago...4x4 moded the poor thing

as for the term "shade tree mechanic" I think it's generally used to describe the person that works on cars, but has no certification and does the work at his house...sometimes that's just what people have to do, I've done about 90% of the work on my own Mark8 as "shade tree" (in my own yard---or Lasers) did all my own sterio install, I bet it's so loud, that I can't even hear you bitch about it, and I'm not a sterio guy

when it comes down to most things on car, they are just beefed up wagons with electricity in them, and no more mules
anybody that can read and has thumbs can work on anything..we are the smartest creatures on earth, so if one guy does something unique one way, and someone else does it another...so what, if it works..it works..Nuff said

This thread is ghey. Here is something much cooler:

the use of the shade tree term is best described when compared to "the N word".

its ok for a person to refer to themselves as a shade tree mechanic but it's considered derogatory when a "pro mechanic" refers to someone else as a "shade tree".

if Jeff my shade tree buddy called me a shade tree it wouldn't offend me.
if ripped camel called me a shade tree it wouldn't be considered a compliment.

with that said...when i have to work on my car...do i put it under a shade tree?
hell yeah..duh

NO...i put it under Lasers car port ...DUH
and with the proper ammount of wind, the shade tree comes to us...how's THAT for skill...lol

Welcome to LVC!

if you dont get insulted, you simply aren't paying attention or are too stupid to realize you were insulted.
you are now officially LVC

Okay. Gotta admit. That was pretty fuggin cool!

cooler is the rest of the video of her face planting the wall over....and over..before she gets it right.

uncooler, is the parents videotaping repeated above mentioned faceplants

Hmmm. That's not the way it is where I come from. But I guess that could be the case elsewhere.

hell yeah..duh

Me too.

And I used to be a professional mechanic. I've worked in several professional shops in my time. I'm out of the mechanic business now, but I still work on my own vehicles. And I will call myself a shadetree mechanic without reservation. Because I am one. It's as simple as that. I do my own work, at my own home, in my own driveway (I don't actually have a shade tree...or agarage...or a carport).

And yes when you tell a member of LVC "it worked for me" you are recomending it to them.

No. If I had said "hey, everybody put slime in your springs!" That would be recommending it. I said I did it, it worked for me, it may not be a good idea, if you want to use it that's up to you. I did not "recommend" it. Sorry.
