So about 3 weeks ago I purchased a 2001 Lincoln Ls V8 Sport with 77K miles for $6995.overpriced I know, but I fell in love with it at first site. It ran awesome during the test drive and on the way home from the dealership. But just in case I asked the guy to throw in a 6 month warrenty because I have heard mixed reviews on their reliability, and had not yet discovered this forum.

Well the next day I got in the car and the airbag light is on and flashing. 3 flashes then 6 flashes then on steady for a couple seconds. This was followed by the malfunction of the radio lights. Apparently they are supposed to be "smart" and only the ones you need light up. Well sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

Shortly thereafter I began hearing the telltale clack of bad ball joints, but no worries, upon inspecting the trunk I found 2 new ones in the tire compartment.

Well you know what was coming next. The horrible awful hesitation in 5th gear at about 45-50mph when accelerating. The CEL light came on and I had the codes read at the auto parts store. Cylinder 2 misfire. So I went and bout 8 Bosch double platinum's and planned on doing all the plugs and the number 2 coil. I know I should do them all at once but I cant afford all 8 right now. So I pull out the coils and plugs and what do I see? Plugs 2 and 8 are dripping with oil and their is a small puddle in the spark plug wells 2 and 8. Well I guess I'll have to spend my Saturday doing gaskets right? Wrong. You cant buy them Anywhere. You cant even order them from most auto parts stores. So now I will leave it disassembled and wait for the gaskets to get here. However the dood Maxx or whatever isn't in at the ford place today. So where can I order these gasket kits right now? Any ideas? Also will it hurt to leave the intake tube, coils and plug's out till the gasket arrives?

dont get bosch's, get the oem motorcraft ones. also for less than 200 bucks you can get all 8 plugs off ebay. there r mixed reviews and some say they are just as good and others say they will last u 6 months. i'd do it if i knew about em before i spent like 500 on the overpriced ones. you could probably get the valve cover gaskets from rockauto.com or parts.com good luck and dont worry, we pretty much have all the problems locked down here. just keep checkin back here n ull kno exactly what to do to get her back in shape....that bitch....

Unfortunately no. The warranty will cover only the ball joints, as far as the engine goes its only internally lubricated parts that are covered. Not to mention it's through the Guardian warranty company. I researched them after the fact and it seems that they are famous for denying claims. Go figure. So do u guys think it will hurt to leave it apart for a few days till the gaskets come. BTW I got the complete gasket set from Rockauto.com for Less than $50.00 . Hopefully it dont take long to arrive.

Anyone had similar issues with the Radio controls or airbag light. I know the search function may help but What a pain in the a$$ entering an image verification for every search.

On a side not I work in a salvage yard and am hopin we have some old Taurus's I can snag some coils out of.

Btw any performance Upgrades I can do while I got this thing halfway apart?

If you mean the radio controls on the steering wheel you need to replace your clockspring

Well that depends on how deep your pockets are. There are not to many performance mods that can be done easily or on the cheap for this platform. Most users have intake, exhaust (mufflers and tubing for gen1), or a canned tune

The controls on the wheel work well. Its the ones on the radio that only light occasionally. I shopped around for a k and n filter all day. The only one that i could fin is the flat one for the stock airbox. Can an 01 use one of the cones?

I'll mail you out a gasket kit on Monday. PM me.

nvrm just saw you ordered from rock auto.

Make sure that the gasket set that you bought has the little o rings that go on the spark plug wells. And yes do all the plugs and coils while you are in there. Seem like to me you bought the car right when these common issues begin to happen on this car.

all normal stuff easy to fix

yep, just replace the plugs with platinum, I use autolight, no problems. Felpro gaskets from rockauto, coils from ebay, clockspring dealer or other. easy fixes, then your good for another 100k. Yes mine started those problems around 72K. Just come back to the forum when you need more help

I had 6 month guardian warranty on mine and i had passenger side valve cover gasket done for 100 bucks!!! !00 dollar deductible and it cost an extra 120 that the warranty covered. Always ask never assume!! BTW mine is 2000 v-8 sport and only had a tick short of 50,000 miles. so is valve cover gasket covered under your warranty,it should be!!

When you search for the K&N setup... Search for the one for the '02 T-Bird, thats the one you need I think. (They don't market a Intake Kit for the LS, but the Tbird setup is for same 3.9 v8)

You could also check LS Koncepts, the link is in the banner on the right side of the forum, they have a less expensive solution for intake vs the K&N.

I believe seals and gaskets are covered. So that would make any parts damaged by the leaking seals and gaskets covered. I'm slow sometimes. However as mentioned above I have already ordered the kit and bought plugs. The engine is apart all the way to the plugs.

Should i reassemble and contact guardian and let them know I am in need of repairs? Since I only bought the car 2 1/2 weeks ago are they gonna say that the problems existed before I purchased making them not covered? And how do they feel about you bringing your own parts? I dot believe the gasket kit shipped yet so maybe I can cancel the order. Or should I do this myself to make sure it's done right? Just to let you know I group mechanics in with lawyers and cops and dentists as far as level of dislike and untrust. Not to knock the aforementioned as people, they just have jobs that tend to rely on screwing people. I'm not trying to drop one dime except the deductible I take it to a shop. I would be livid to find additional charges and services added to my bill. Or to have it not be covered and then be responsible for the diagnosis fee.

Until now I have owned Jeep Cherokees which even a monkey could take completely apart and rebuild. So I'm new to repair shops.

Any more advice you guys can offer?

How can they prove the problem existed, you wouldn't have bought the car if it was driving like that. Just sayin.

That won't work on an '01...... As far as I know, only the KKM will work on the 1st gen LSes.

Do it yourself you already have it apart, and sounds like you'd be better off that way to. That warranty company is junk.

Yep. Get a repair manual. A good one, not a cheapy Hanes book. Spring for the factory set. Minus all the electronics, an engine is still just an engine. If you have moderate wrenching skills you should be able to do the majority of your own repairs. You would be surprised how easy some things are to fix.

BTW, the radio issue sounds like you need a new one; or live with the light issue. If it is the one with the cassette they are pretty reasonable on ebay. Or you can ask your dealer where they send the radios for repair and contact them yourself. I did that and got an exchange for, IIRC, less than $200.

looks to me that they new the problem existed they just went out hook the good old scanner erase the codes re set the ecu wish it means run it less than 40 miles ligh never come on again ha sorry they got you next time run that sucker out a good 50 miles to be in save side as far as the repairs do it your self and save money lol.......

LOL. With dentists its just the creepy uncomfortableness of knowing this guy reaches in peoples nasty A$$ mouths for a living. It creeps me out. I guess the money could make up for it though.

So Advance Auto called me and said that my k&n flat filter has arrived. Should I go pick it up, or order one of the cones of a different make? Do the cones add more HP than the flat ones in your airbox?

what a coincidence, if the valve cover gaskets need to be replaced, then that means that they are allowing oil to leak down in to the plug wells and soak the coils. since this happens on pretty much every LS sooner or later, this makes it a part that is lubricated in the engine internally :D

Some would say that's debatable, but I believe it improves performance to a small degree. It is certainly louder so it'll at least feel faster. The problem with running a conical filter is that it is pulling in hot air from the engine bay with no way to pull in the cool outside air. I would recommend a heat shield to keep the hot air from the filter, and if you want to get really creative you can run a hose from the lower grille up to the filter to help feed it. You can also run the filter into the fender but that takes some creativity with the LS as the openings aren't big enough to run the intake tube through and then you have to worry about water getting into the intake. I don't know what you bought and what you didn't but I would recommend copper plugs as they are the most efficient, expensive plugs aren't worth it. I do believe LS Kustoms still sells the aluminum intake tube for the first gens, so if you really want to increase throttle response you can get one of those as well. Also, I don't know if you want to go this route but when my coils went out I decided to retrofit a set of Accel coils for the 4.6 and haven't had a problem with them since.

2000 Lincoln LS

I had the coils, plugs and wires replaced and now my transmission won't shift correctly. I had it scanned and it came up as solenoid C. The solenoid block was replaced and the speed sensor. It shifts great 1,2,3 then it RPM's up and goes to 5th gear. Any idea what happened? Also, there were no metal shavings in the pan or filter when it was taken off.
The dealership said $3500 to fix. It shifts fine except for D4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
