PIC request. floor cut open for fuel pump access

I saw on one of these boards a pic where someone cut under the back seat so they can pull the fuel pumps without dropping the tank. Anyone got the Pic(s) of it?
 
Would be nice to see. Brother did that on his Trans Am. For some reason the damn thing ate fuel pumps. So by the 3rd one, he said screw it, and made a panel. Made things so much faster and easier.
 
IF i were going to do this.. and I've changed a BUNCH OF PUMPS over the years on mine and other cars.

I would ONLY do this after removing the tank, not "instead" of removing the tank.

there's a wrong way to change the fuel pump AND the hack way to change the fuel pump.

I have to ask, why are so many so reluctant or leary about dropping the tank?
you see the comments regarding the driveshaft and such and people piss and moan about having to mess with the tank.

not saying the OP is pissing and moaning..but..I'm just curious
 
I've had holes in previous cars floor boards (SHUT UP JEFF)
I wouldn't put any more in there than there already is.

I've dropped that tank 4 times and it doesn't get any easier in my old age. Dropping it isn't really the problem, installing it and getting the hoses attached and getting the tank aligned is a PITA just to swap a set of pumps or checking the wiring which is what I want to do.

the second time I did mine it was at the dragstrip
We didn't even jack up the drivers side of the car.

we got the passenger side up high and made it happen.

it aint all that bad
 
i would think cutting that hole in the floor would severely compromise the crash rigidity needed there. better to not need it and have it than not have it when you need it. just a thought...
 
This is custom car fabrication gentlemen. I've built a TON of custom and customized cars and when you've had cars drop off or slip on a set of jackstands or been on the road and had a part fail on the side of the road you do things that make life easier to repair. I'm thinking about doing this becuase of the work involved in getting the car up in the air to fit my fat ass, tools to get all of the parts out of the way dropping a near full tank of gas. Because of the three Stainless steel -8 AN lines and 2 huge pumps, I cant just tilt it and wiggle it out. Trust me I've tried.

I had a 70 trans am that I built and it had THOUSANDS of dollars in paint work. I was on the Hot rod power tour and the pump gave out n the middle of no where. I had it towed 70 miles to a house with no jackstands, jacks, good lighting, gas canisters (I needed 7 of them), or a full set of tools. I had to buy all the stuff and do the swap and then give most of it away because I didnt have the space to haul it all. If all I have to do is take a 10mm ratchet and lift a panel that cut out and swap a fuel pump done in a an hour, yea I'm going to consider it.

So what it sounds like something an F-body owner would do, does it make it wrong to cut into your own car. Its a big oddly shaped metal and plastic ball, Its not like cutting into your first born. Its just a car. No there is no structural damage by doing this because all your cutting weak sheet metal that is a part of the seat mount.
 
Then do it and make a nifty painted panel with a rubber gasket like an Acura.
 
i was gonna do it to my 93 but, the 93 sending unit and lines are 1/8 inch under the floor pan, gauranteed to cut the lines or the harness!! but the 2nd gens have tons of room between the floor and pump so i say do it too. i changed a pump in a tauras years ago it had a factory panel under the rear seat. why ford didnt do this to all vehicles!! specially the mark, it sucks ass to drop the tanks in them. cut it dude, like you said, its just a car, make a nice new panel to go over the hole, run a bead of seam sealer and rivet it back on and your good!!!
 
Several vehicles out there are this way. Find a port hole big enough from another vehicle and use it. That way it looks good after you're done.
 
I gotta put a pump in mine this weekend... and my LMS exhaust is all 1 piece.... guess what I get to hack up?

Well, when you do it, get some V-Bands welded into it. ;)

It didn't really bother me, until the blue bottle came into play, that's when everything got really weird :eek:

And nobody told me that pointing the bottle valve at the back of my head was a bad idea either, nor that putting the bottle under the hatchback window on a BLACK CAR in Texas wasn't the best idea either.

HOW in the hell we survived those days.. I dont know.

That little 302 didn't survive the bottle, god rest it's pistons...LMAO

We should be dead so many times over at cat would be jealous.

I will have to say that after being in Kennindale, watching some guys warm a bottle with a propane torch was none the less eventful.

I really actually thing we could write a book on some of the things we should have died over IE: 410 sawed off with slugs and 20lbs propane bottles :eek:

I'm going to have to change the pump on my '96 again soon. I did it about 5 years ago when the original pump died. It was a funny situation. I had parked at the daycare to pick up my kids and when I got them in the car and tried to start it up, it wouldn't fire. I finally figured out that the pump was dead because I could not hear the humm when I turned the key. So I got out, opened the trunk, pulled out the tire tool, and out of desperation, beat the bottom of the gas tank about 10 times with the tire tool. And guess what! It cranked and got me home. But when I got home, that was the end of the pump. It never worked again. I got a good used one and installed it the following weekend. It was a huge PITA. Why I didn't just cut a damned hole in the floor then I will never know. But I'm going to do it this time before I have to replace it again. I'm getting too old to be lying on my back under a car on ramps and jackstands dropping a flippin' gas tank if I don't have to. If all I gotta do is pull out the back seat, open a flap, and replace the pump, then that's what I'm gonna do. KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid!
