Time for a new tranny

The '93 Mark will be on its third tranny of its long life. I'm almost at 174k miles now.

Shudder Guard no longer doing the job, the TC has finally bit the dust. I was able to nurse it along for 3 years though.

Dropped the car off at the shop Friday to have it replaced and the tranny possibly rebuilt.

Sigh.

The only thing left to replace now is the engine. Let's hope that Ford engineering lasts a little longer. I now have tires, transmission, and suspension that should last at least another 50,000 miles.

By the way, just want to say that I love this site. It has saved me a lot of money over the 4.5 years I've been here.
 
You should try to find a 98 trans to go in and you won't have to worry with it again. If you ever do, just make sure who ever puts it in knows how to wire the harness for it.
 
Interesting idea. Good luck finding one though, right? I really don't have time to look, the car is limping along.

One question though, and I really don't have time to do a search -

Anybody have a rough estimate of what it would cost me to put some 4.10 gears in, parts and labor?

All depends on the shop. Average I think is around $300 to $400 and the 98 tranny's are out there. One on ebay now I think. Just make sure it's stamped on the top "98". It's worth having one shipped to you after what would be paid for a tranny rebuild.

The 4R70W transmissions are abundant. You can get one for an extremely affordable price. They can probably have one shipped to you, with a warranty, within a day or two.

I replaced my transmission at about 185k miles.
 
The trans doesn't need to come out of a Mark, a 98+ 4r70w from a Mustang NON Police Crown Vic, or Grand Marquis will bolt right in... for the Vic or Marquis you will need a different converter though...

Idealy you should be looking at $400-$500 TOPS for a low mile used trans... and then if you need to get a converter $150-$200 for a stock size and stall... much better than the $1500+ any shop will want, and you can get rid of the junk one way clutch.
 
When i needed a trans I found one off a 99 Grand Marquis with 22k on it for only $275 at a junk yard an hour away.

PKE-AD is stronger better clutches valve body ect.
A stronger trans, I think all 98 + trans are ID by PKE-AD #s

Keep in mind that all 98 + trans are a bolt in, the harness neeeds to be re-pined.
There is alot of bad info out about this, PM KK I am sure he has a link with the correct info on
how to re-pin the trans.
 
Cant the stock 93 tranny be upgraded with the newer parts?:confused: And what the hell does that chick in the Sig keep repeating? It's driving me nuckin futs!

Seems high to me also.
I would install a pre-98 It just depends on how you drive.
If you are at WOT all the time you need a 98 +.

If you an old fart like me and just drive it and not beat the crap out of it a 93-97 trans j-modded will hold up just fine.
 
Oh ya, I'm sure 93-97 is fine, but having seen how cheap Jamie let his recent 98's go, I'd be inclined to just look out for a good deal on one of those and be done with it.

The guy I took the car to doesn't know how to rewire the 98.

You guys have to remember, I'm not a mech, I'm a driver. And I live in Louisville.
 
On here somewhere is some correct directions on installing the 98. (I haven't got time to look now, but I'll look into it later unless somebody else beats me to it) - once he has the instructions, it will be easy.

Mind, if you are pushed for time and that 93 is all that's available, then by all means go ahead.
 
Its a simple re-pin, but there is a lot of bad info out there on which wires.
But I also know KK has a correct link for the info.
I will try to find it when work slows down later today.

When you show it to your wrench he will get it, honestly it the easy part of the whole job.

I'm going to flush it first. This might buy me a couple of months or more. I can search in peace if it works, even temporarily.

Man, I feel pretty good. My '96 has got 290K on it and the tranny still shifts just fine with only a slight hint of slip every now and then. When that happens, I change the fluid and filter and put in a quart of Lucas anti-slip and keep on drivin'. I guess I'm lucky.
 
Speaking of trannys, how difficult are they to rebuild, given that you are mechanically inclined but have never worked on a transmission before?

I have a spare 98, but it's pretty high mileage. I'm thinking it might be a good winter project to rebuild it and hold it for when my 97 gives out.
