why use the trac-loc

I've had two of the trac loc's and they sucked. I'm searchin through the search function to learn about modding this Mark VIII and EVERYBODY recomends 4.10 gears and a trac loc. I had to go to an Eaton to get any reliability and was just trying to figure why nobody on here wasted one yet.
 
well judging by your user name: no one has a 9 sec markviii yet (burbank is workin on it:D) and for the power we put down they are ok
 
I moved to an Eaton True-Trac and 4.30s after a couple years and a few hundred track passes on the '93.

I rebuilt it with extra clutches and a stiffer spring and installed it (still with 4.10s) in the '96.

I guess it depends on the usage, but for most, 4.10s with the trac-lok all you really need. :)

I waisted the trac loc's when the car ran low 13's (28 spline)and later high 11's (31 spline) on spray. That car did 60' in the 1.60's but was a lighter car so I would think the Eaton is a much sexier piece to go with. I know that's what mine is getting.

Why is that, I NEVER dumped a clutch, so with a 4000 stahl and some bolt on mods I suppose the car is capable of 1.7 60' times anyway right? I think regardless of price I will be using an Eaton carbon fiber unit to be safe.
For some reason my earlier post didn't show up, I mention that my Mach wasted the ford units while running low 13's then a 31 spline unit running 11.80 on n2o. My 60' times were 1.6's

It's going to take more than bolt ons and a stall converter to get 1.7 60' times out of a full weight Mark VIII.

At least I've never seen it. 1.8s, yes, but not 1.7s.

The detroit locker? No thanks, they clunk like a bitch on the freeway round turns when they "unratchet". Damn things are really strong though! I considered that unit before I went with a spool in the Mach but decided against the locker as a spool is proven to be good strength wise.

That doesn't look like the one I was speaking of but that one looks pretty good. The one I speak of had like teeth that once the car is straight, the posi is locked but once it turns, the teeth "pop out' shaking the car (sometimes) which i don't want in the rain going around a bend at 65 mph. I'm gonna speak with Eaton and see what they recomend, don't need anything too strong for the Mark it's not like I'm gonna get 1.32 60' times like the Mach.
 
i agree with geno, with an auto there isn't the drive train shock that you get with a stick. I'm still running a 28 spline trac loc and haven't had any problems, but I'm not really drag racing either. Personal preference and budget depth are big factors though. I have also had the new Detroit units and they are vastly improved over the older ones. They are much more street friendly now.

So fellas, whats these run bone stock? what will i run with a good safe sct tune, headers and 2.5 full duals and x pipe k n filter or better 3.73 gears and a posi. Keep in mind im an excellent driver. Man is this sleeping pill kickin in whew! ggimme som e numbers here wow im tired lol cant typppe

LOL I'm glad somebody caught that before I looked like a toad. Ok, well I'm quite the fatazz and hopefully I dip into the 13's with those few mods but no biggy if I don't theres always next year. Man you can dig up ANY photo on the web, good find of Dustin Hoffman.
 
It's actually a Eaton Detroit true trac, and yes they are bad ass. Had a pair in my 99 f-150 (front and back axles, 5 speed) I drove the piss out of that truck, used 4 wheel low alot also. If I can't break one in 4 wheel low, I don't see you breaking one in the mark. I also cracked 3 ford limited slips in half prior to the true tracs. They have no poping or grinding, smooth and silent, instant lock up, take regular 90w. You just need to learn how to apply throttle on the corners, very easy to throw the ass end out. It also gives you a huge advantage street racing for take off. you can have on tire in gravel and one on the pavement, when you hammer it the one on the pavement will hook, the one in the gravel will do nothing. It is capable of transfering all power to one side (the one with grip)

If its a gen 2 mark your going to need a higher stall converter to see the 13's. Without a converter should be 14.5-14.2. Sounds like you use the spray how much you going to throw at the mark.
