Extremely Strong Raw Fuel Smell!!!

Guys, a couple weeks ago I'm driving to a local fast food restaurant, I have the A/C on. I roll down my windows when I pull up to the drive thru & it hits me... & I mean very strong wiff. Imagine pouring gasoline in a glass & sticking your nose in it. It happened again today, I was taking my grandma home from the grocery strore & when we got off the car it hit me again. VERY, VERY strong, so strong my grandmother tells me; "Oh God, someone's fueling a lawnmower somewhere!" What could it be? Where could it come from?

Where exactly, I was down there last weekend while replacing the compressor & didn't see any of that, + the smell comes from the rear of the car, not the front

No I haven't changed it, the car is performing beautifully but I know I need to do an entire tune up of the car. The car looks like it has the spark plugs & wires from when it came out the showroom. I know I have to do that as soon as I get a job.
 
The canister purges to the rear. Look under the rear bumber and you will see a couple black lines. I think one goes to the tank and the other to the canister. Its a black "box" attached to the compressor tray. This one in particular is very solid, another black box is for compressor intake.

I had mine out a couple weeks ago - rust heaven on one side, fuel on the other.

If you are in the habit of topping of the tank you can flood the canister. Once that is done its over. NEVER top off the tank if you do.

Reminds me, I need a new canister myself!
 
i never topped mines off but sometimes I smell alot of fuel too...so, I just pull over and release the pressure by opening the fuel cap...then after that, it would stop
 
^ sounds like a defective purge solenoid. Could be the problem with both Marks.
 
? I always fill mine to the max and have never smelled fuel before. I have accidentally filled it till the cap before a couple times and still didn't have the smell.
 
just a guess, I had a 93 and the fuel filler tube where it went into the tank had a crack-usually wasn't a problem but if full, it leaked enough that you could smell gas after filling it up-I used to try to keep it a couple of gallons below full (PITA)-get under it after a fillup, if that is it you can easily see it leak where the tube meets the plastic tank there, IRC it is a somewhat common problem.
 
Guess I better be careful.....Have filled mine to the top numerous times........no more though.
 
To me it sounds like clogged fuel filter....but thats just me.....i like to start with the cheapest thing first...then I move myself up.
 
.........ok? just wondering how a clogged fuel filter could make a fuel smell, unless it rusted through :shifty: if thats the case it long over due!
 
Well, definately I have homework to do... This week is tough for me due to some family issues but it's something to look at for next Monday. The undercarriage of my car is 100% rust free, it looks like that of a 3 year old car so rust isn't the problem. I don't think it's the fuel filter though. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't clogged up fuel filters make the car bog at times? I've had this happen to me in 2 Ford's & that's been the solution. Anyway, both times that I've smelled the raw fuel the tank's been a bit over 3/4 but NOT full so overfilling it is not the issue. I'll be looking at the evap canister, the lines & the fuel filter. Once I find the issue I will advise everyone. Thanks guys!

You are either very lucky or living on borrowed time.

This is a common well known issue with the mark 8's and the evap system.
it's common knowledge that you dont "top off" the tanks on these cars.

Just because you've been lucky, doesnt mean the issue doesnt exist.

your comments will lead others to "believe" the issue is not true and they wind up screwing themselves based on the bad information that they see in this thread.

That's correct, it's "just you" that thinks a clogged fuel filter would smell like leaking fuel.

not many people who have adequate knowledge of how the fuel system operates feel this way.

Obviously it is not common or I would have known cause I am just a common American, :p

The previous (first) owner said he only filled it up too. Of course my car is always properly maintained and has zero rust so that may have something to do with it but for my job I drive 100 miles every day so every 3 days I filled it to the max and have not had a fuel issue.

Your a n00b, that doesnt even know the "common issues" with this car, please try not to pass on bad information.

you have been lucky, count your lucky stars.

READ the owners manual, it expressly says "DO NOT FILL" after the pump automatically shuts off!

now it doesnt go into fine detail to spoonfeed you WHY you dont do it.

but.. if Lincoln put it in the owners manual, that my friend falls under the category of "COMMON KNOWLEDGE"...

M'kay?
