I know this may have been answered somewwhere before but looking for quick and simple answer....

I am considering on building an engine for my mark... I have a 96 LSC, I would like to have a project and was thinking of redoing a block from the ground up, my question is about the finished product. If i do this and like I said its a 96, does the block have to be from a 96 or can I use any block (32V) from any year mark? Since I have the one off IMRC's on mine and want to keep them, does this eliminate the option for Cobra intake? What I'm concerned about are the Electrical connections and ECU sensors, were there any specific to 96 with the known exception of IMRC's. If I choose to build a full cobra motor are there any immediate concerns?

You can use any year block, you don't have to use a Mark VIII teksid block either. You can use any 4.6 block aluminum or iron...
 
Now how much power can these blocks handle? I was thinking about doing the same thing for my car but building it for forced induction.
 
A question I've had is at what point in it's life does it NOT make sense to rebuild a block?

If you hae a high mileage engine, are there good reasons to not use the block as your starting point for a rebuild? Or can you rebuild these things over and over?

And it sounds like another trip to Bristol is in the offing. ;)
 
An engine can be rebuilt many times over as long as the walls have not been bored too far and there are no cracks.
A 93-98 Mark VIII, 96-98 Cobras and some 99 Cobras all have the Teksid block. The block itself can handle well north of 1200 hp. I have seen a couple running 33 psi twin turbos and run 1600 on an engine dyno.
The Cobra 8 bolt crank is good for 1200hp, not sure what the 6 bolt can handle. 750ish would be it limits I believe.
If you can score some 03/04 Cobra rods then they can handle over 1000 hp as well but their pistons cant. They are good pistons but the tolerence is too tight so after 700 rwhp you run into a risk of too much piston expansion. :(

IDK if the plug for the Cobras IMRC is different but if you did a Cobra plenum it will bolt up just fine.

Also, keeping the IMRC is very important IMHO. I have played and modded these motors since 1998 and learned allot about them. The IMRC makes the engine much nicer on the street even on a heavily modded setup. I dont even like to remove it for a centri application since you still need the ram effect at lower RPMs since the blower is not "spooled".
A positive displacement blower is a different story though and does not need the IMRC. The KB kit even comes with a new lower plenum to get rid of all of that.
Wish the KB kit had an intercooler cause it would be a no brainer for me then.

The advice I would offer is to use your Teksid block and then get yourself a set of "C" heads from a Mach1 or Marauder. Pick up a set of forged recipricals and you have the basis for anything you want to build, with a lot more choices for induction, even the KB inter-cooled version that I went with. A good source of info for you is the Sean Hyland book on the 4.6 engine.

Yes it just might be.. I found a local guy he's down the road and we seem to have a bunch in comon , he's build dragsters and done beefy motors and trans apllications, he stated he like my mark and would be interested in seeing how much power we could get with a rebuilt trans, T/C and some motor mods.. basically I provide the money, he will provide the mechanical ability!

I'm going on Vaca Aug 2 to Aug 9 so after that is done, I'm hunting for a block and Trans, I'm gonna look for a non running block and Blown trans to rebuild from Scratch!

Thanks again for the last round... (Did I tell you it broke down on me 2 days later :(.. AC Clutch locked up Side of the road fix took 3 hours getting bearing off and new one on..) BUT now AC ICE Cold..

I have heard alot about this book... I am gonna look for a copy when I get back from vacation.. Also

Does the motor really have to come out of the bottom of the car? can it be pulled from the top?
 
it can come out either way. read: bottom is easier! dont be scared it comes right out, it CAN come out the top but its tight
 
On another note related to this question, are there any years of the mark viii that have better engines? Or are they all the same? The cobra motor from the 99-01 cobra will bolt right in as well right? I have a few options to choose from when I go to the junk yard, just not sure what I want to pull yet.
 
All Mark motors are the same, except the 2nd gens got a crappier intake manifold (that happens to be a lot easier to work with.) The 99-01 Cobra motor will bolt in, it's the same motor with C heads, a better intake manifold, and usually a high price tag.

I can get one for $800 dollars that's why I am asking, although I do know what you are talking about with the price tag. I called a junkyard and asked for the cobra motor, they said $2500, then I asked about the mark viii motor and they said $1000, I was like WTF?!

Since I'm going to rebuild the motor, should I just get the Mark VIII motor and buy cobra parts for it?

If I do the cobra intake at the time, other then the IMRC's (Cause I had to get the 96 LSC) Is there any MANDATORY modifications that have to be made in order to make it work properly with my ECU?

I have heard that if you use the Cobra computer that you will get a jump in power as well. Just a thought.

Dont know if I can since I have the ONE YEAR only 96 Mark... Will the harness wire up correctly without mod? I dont want to strip the harness out and replace... This one is good and Dont want to take a chance that the Cobra could have a bad wire in it and trying to track it down would be a nightmare!

Yeah might as well stick with a tune. I was unaware of the 96 mark being different from the rest. I am keeping my car OBD 1 but I am still probably swapping in the 99-01 cobra motor, because there are a lot of places geared to selling performance parts strictly for that year engine.

The automatic cars computer gives more initial timing so really a Cobra computer would prolly hurt off the line. Tune is always the better option.
 
dont use the cobra pcm, more than likely total repin, just reflash what you got. i put a dohc into a sohc bird and used the stock pcm w/ a reflash.
