door handle question

Maybe they're Continental handles? Maybe they are as slowmkviii described? That could be the reason.

if they are conti handles i can see them being thicker with bolted weights, but like i did say, NO factory MARK VIII 2nd gen handles had bolted weights, the conti's sure could have come that way though and just looking at a conti door handle you would never know if it was a conti handle or a mark VIII handle. actually now that this came up about continental handles, i did buy a green left and right handle from a 97 continental from a junk yard with the chrome pull handles, and those were the thicker gen 2 style pull handle with a bolted weight on them, so thats probably what this guy has in his mark VIII are continental door handles.

here are pics of a 1st gen handle, and 2 second gen handles, these are mark VIII handles, not continental's
these first 3 pics are of my pass handle on my 93, this is the original handle, thin, flat and weak

this is my driverside handle on my 93, which i replaced, this is a factory 97 handle , much thicker, slightly curved pull handle, much stronger.

and this is the red one front and back, 97 mark VIII handle.

i take back what i said about continental handles too, the ones that are the same as 97-98 mark VIII's are molded weights too, the earlier continental handles are bolted weights too, so who knows what you have for handles, but my arguement still stands, you dont have gen 2 handles if your weight is bolted on. this is a conti handle

from the 97
did you ever think that they may have had left overs form gen 1s and used them in the gen 2s

forget it dude i dont know anything about these cars anyway lol. your right, you have what you have and i'm wrong. sorry i posted.

don't forget you are not the only person who has ever worked on a mark
but then again you might have seen everything there is to see
I am so sorry that My Gen 2 Marks don't have a molded counter weights

i didnt say i was the only one, but in the last 10 years i have worked on more marks than you will see in your lifetime, i know what door handles are what. i dont mind an arguement i sometimes learn new things myself but i'll win this one hands down!!

what the hell does that picture prove???? thats a first gen door handle, just because you took it out of your 97, doesnt mean its a 97 door handle, it means someone before you replaced that handle in your 97 with a door handle from a 93-96. look at my pictures i posted, i have a first gen handle in my 93, its the pass side and has never been changed, yet my driver side handle is a 97-98 handle because i put it in, i get 97 and 98 mark's all the time that i part out that have bolted weights on the handles, its because someone along the way changed the handle and put a first gen handle in it, they all interchange. very easy to figure out what you have, a 1st gen handle in a 2nd gen mark.

I like to argue too
like I said I think they used door handles with weights in gen 2s
both of my 97s are very early in build dates the 98 though Im not sure

the molded handles started in late 96, all 97 and all 98 mark VIII's came from the factory with molded handles dude are you not reading what i type, did you buy your car brand new??? someone has changed your door handles sometime before you bought your car, almost every mark VIII still left on earth has had at least one of the handles replaced since new, they are crap, they break when you look at them wrong, think what you want to think but i am telling you that no 97 or 98 mark VIII ever left the michigan plant with a bolted counter weight door handle installed. take your door handles out and look at the part number stamped on the handle basket and i will bet you my life that the part # starts with F3, F4, or F5

for what it's worth, i just replaced both sides on my 96, they had the bolted counterweights-but from the looks of the gasket behind the housing, they look like they might have been done before. Whole time I was doing them (took almost 3 hours) I wondered why the new ones were molded, they are hard to install since you have to get the counterweight in the door opening and then attach the rods for the lock and latch plus the electrical connector on the lock cylinder. Installing the bolted type would have made it easier, but knowing what a pain this job is I'd rather fight with the better (molded) handles so I don't have to do this again.
