door handle question

yes, they do, 1st gen's are thinner and have a bolted on counter weight, 2nd gens are thicker and have a molded counter weight. 2nd gen are stronger by far.

Ok, just so I'm reading your words right....they will interchange? I can put a Gen 1 handle on a Gen 2? It's for my 97, which was originally meant to be a parts car, so I'd rather do it cheaply. I got one on eBay for $20. I guess I'll just have to reinforce it and/or be really careful with it. It's for the passenger side and I never have passengers in this car. I only drive it to work.

Jamie do you happen to have Gen 2 door handles in pearl white? Both sides? I've got a friend that needs one also.

Thanks.

What does that counterweight do? I pulled a handle off a 97, for my 94, they both had the identical counterweight.

For ease of installation I removed it. This was after many failed attempts to insert it safely without scratching everything up of course.

Edit - got the wrong year for the donar handle - it was a 2nd gen, 1997.

my door handles from my 98 have the bolt on counter weight
I will be doing the ones in the 97 in a few days I will see if those are the same

if anyone has a 97 or 98 with a bolted counter weight that means its been replaced and with a 1st gen handle!!! only 1st gens had bolted counter weights, late 96, all 97 and all 98 had a molded weight, the handle is different too, a first gen handle is thin and flat, the second gens are slighty contoured and alot thicker.

in my 98 both the passenger and driver handle are the thick ones and have the counter weights bolted on

Not to hijack the thread but on the topic of door handles would the interior door handles from a gen 2 work in a gen 1? I found some nice chrome ones in a gen 2 out here and I think they would look good in place of my interior colored door handles.

thats impossible there are only two style handles made, the thin with bolted weights, and the thicker slightly curved handles with molded weights. i'll argue till im blue in the face, but there is no way.

just took the old handles out of my black 97 and they were the thick handle with the bolt in weight I will take pics tomorrow

if you are calling them thick, then you have not held a real 2nd gen handle in your hand, never was a 2nd gen handle made with a bolted on counter weight. and yes the chrome 2nd gen inside handles will work in a 1st gen mark. i sell the chrome inners all the time.

Thanks for the info! If the chrome inners are still at the wrecking yard when I go back I will get them. If not how much do you sell them for?

$50 bucks for the whole deal, the handles, the cables and the door latch mechanisms just swap it all in.

so what you are saying is that all three of my gen 2 marks have gen 1 door handles but are thicker than all my friends gen 1s
this is not probably going to happen

forget it dude i dont know anything about these cars anyway lol. your right, you have what you have and i'm wrong. sorry i posted.
