Brand new oil pan leaking :(

This sucks. I was under the car a few weeks ago and noticed a tiny bit of oil on the bottom of the kick out sump on the oil pan. I jacked the car up and looked with a mirror etc and couldn't see well enough to tell where it was coming from (trans lines are in the way.) I put some dye in the oil, and some material up top, and moved the lines to see if I could tell if it was the pan or the gasket.
The top of the kick out part is bone dry, nothing from the gasket, the sides are dry too, it's just the bottom at the seam. :(

I guess I get to do this wonderful job again, and I just put in two new Ford front struts as well, my bank loves me now ;)

Good thing I noticed it before the alignment I guess...

If it's at the bottom where you can get to it, then couldn't you use some JB weld on it or maybe braze it? That way you don't have to pull it off again.
 
I was thinking that, but it's brand new. So I rather just swap it with another brand new one. I know it's more work, but it'll be done right ;)




...I'm still not looking forward to doing it again though, lol...

A new pan? I would check with who you bought it from, it would be defective and should get exchanged.
 
If your having corrosion issues with a new pan.. you might consider blasting your next pan and putting a good oven baked coat of paint on it.

I'm sure the factory doesnt do the best job when they "shoot some paint" on the pan.

I'd blast it clean.. prep it very meticulously..and repaint it and bake the paint on...might give you better luck than the factory paint.

It's from the Ford dealer, they said they'd order a new one for me.

I may try coating the new one, I just don't know how to test it first as someone mentioned. Only problem is if I coat it, and it leaks again, then they may tell me to bad...
 
I used to do third party inspection on fusion bond epoxy {aka powdercoating)

a properly prepped and applied FBE application stands a far better chance of 100% adhesion than a "paint and thinner" coating that production manufacturers apply.

I've seen FBE coatings that were applied 40 years ago that are still properly attached to the pipe.

On that same note.. I've seen improperly prepped FBE that fell off before the truck could get it out of the coating plant.

Same goes for "paint and thinner" coatings.. IF someone takes the time to properly prep the item.. it'll last far longer than what ford originally applied.
 
I would still go POR, as long as you prep the surface that :q:q:q:q holds!

My friend painted a rusted out gas tank with it and it has been holding for a year now without leaking.
 
To test it I would say to fill it with water and let it set for a day to see if you get any puddles.
 
True Roadboss, I didn't think of that. Water is thinner, so if it leaked water that would be a sure sign, thanks... :)

I don't know where to get POR-15 up here. Eastwood used to sell it, and has their own 'Rust Encapsulator' now...
 
Thanks kustomizing, I found out they do have a Canadian dsitributor up here. I'll look into it more once I have the new pan in my hands...
 
did you try humping like someone else? HAHAHAHA Sounds like the dealer is gonna hook you up with a new one. I was just gonna say I dont know if I would braise it. Braising and heat ont like eachother. I dont know if an oil pan gets hot enough to break down a braising, but I wouldnt take the chance. As for POR, I've never used the stuff. I rhinolinded the entire underside of my truck though and that thing went everywhere without even getting scratched let allone rusting.
 
I can ask ym girl... She lives in Orangeville. she does detailing and her brother has a shop. One of them must know where to find that stuff
 
Looks like I am waiting for a new pan.
I bought the second last pan in North America that we can find it seems. The last one sold a week or so after I got mine (in June.) I wish I had found this leak earlier... :(
They said new ones are expected 9/17, Max confirmed this too. I hope one of them comes up here, but I'm not holding my breath.
At least it's only a very minor leak I can wipe off. It's only put one drop of oil on the ground so far if I keep wiping it off the pan once a week or so. I don't drive the car much either which helps I guess... :eyeroll:

now you guys can see how i managed to sell 18 gorgeous used oil pans in less than 4 months and now i have ZERO left!!!! i need to pick up a few more junk motors so i can justify tearing them down for the pans!!
 
Sounds like a good idea Jamie, as we all know how good these pans seem to last! I bought a new one because of this, and up here most have rust on them.
I hope Ford can find another. If they end up not being able to get me another new one, I'm going to be p.o'd! With my luck a new pan will be available the week AFTER I put the car in storage for the winter. I told the dealer this and he said we'd figure out something if that happens...
 
Other than the 1 quart reduced capacity, You guys realize a 4.6 mustang pan will fit.........................Right?
 
I had heard the T-Bird one fit, but I didn't think the Mustang one did.
Also it has reduced capacity as you mentioned.
