I'm changing plugs right now and noticed that the throttle body has some black build up around the round intake (for lack of proper terminology) is there a way to clean this up? Does it mean I'm running rich? I have 140,000 on her and have never done anything to that area. Just wondering.
 
Technically you're not supposed to clean the throttle bodies according to Ford but many people do it anyway. It doesn't mean your running rich, it's just buildup over time.

Does Ford give a reason why? Cos im cleaning the iac and was gonna clean the tb as well.
 
Yea, supposedly the throttle body has a special coating on it that can come off with cleaning.
 
I wonder what they mean. Could be an anti corrosion coating or something that stops carbon sticking to it. Maybe its anodised? I cleaned out throttle bodies before on my other cars using aluminium polish, didnt seem to do any harm. I guess it wont hurt...

Yeah you are probably right. Where do you reckon would be the best place to get one? I noticed autozone and the like have em for 50 ish. Am i better spending abit more and just getting one from the dealer?
 
Some carbon buildup can be blamed on the EGR system, when the car is shut off with some exhaust still in the intake manifold.
 
If you got 140000 and its not all that black don't worry about it, the more you redline it the darker its gonna get. You see people WOT it and seen the black come out the pipes? a little bit of that goes back into the intake, hence the thick black look. I wouldn't change the TB or Iac unless you have some problem with the TB sticking or something funny with the idle. And do get a new IAC (if you need one), i tried cleanin them before and they never work like brand new again, If you get a new IAC make sure it comes with the new gasket, and if you take the TB off make sure you put on a new gasket, a little air getting in behind the MAF can cause alot of problems.

Thanks for the info ground zero. I ordered a new motorcraft one today from rock auto but dont know if it comes with a gasket. I will replace both gaskets though.
 
Reply back on how the removal and install of the IAC valve went, you can wait until your blood pressure and anger settle down first though, hope it goes well for you.:D

I will do ponytail john. Just waiting for my new iac to come. I got pretty small hands so i reckon that will help abit. The worst job i have ever done so far has been to change the oil filter. (which had been over tightened by the prev owner) When i came to change it i noticed it was already abit squashed looking from failed attempts! lol. Will see if this job tops that...
 
Thanks for all the insight guys. I replaced the water pump and while I was working on it, I noticed a small leak at the oil filter so I replaced the gasket behind it as well. I also changes plugs and wires (MDS). I'm happy to say, that all the old plugs were burning perfectly. There wasn't a drop of oil on any of the wire boots ether. 140,000 and all seams to be good (knock on wood). The carbon build up really wasn't that bad, so I'm going to leave it alone.

Dude replacing the IAC is WAY worse than the oil filter. I'd take the oil filter anyday over the IAC. I'm 19 years old with some pretty small hands and I never want to do that again.

The mark viii oil filter is easy, just not when its been so overtightened you have to start chiseling it and it falls to bits and slices your hands! Will do a write up once my new iac comes and i attempt fitting it. Any advice always appreciated though!

97 is easy.


the crap on the TB is a combination of PCV residue and EGR. it CAN be cleaned but dont rub it in any way when cleaning. just use the chemical to do it.


part # PM2 from any ford dealer works great (this is an aerosol decarb. kinda like seafoam...but better)

It helps if you unbolt the TB and move it out of the way a lil gives you a little more room. I would buy another throttle body gasket though. I bought one from ford for like 13.00 bucks. I think you can get it WAY cheaper on the net.
 
Thanks for your replies guys. Yeah im gonna put new gaskets on when i do it. If the tb isnt too dirty then shant bother cleaning it. Autozone and the like probably have the gasket cheap. I hope the new iac cures my idle troubles! (i think it will but you never know lol)

I went to Napa and O'Reilly's both of them said it was a dealer only part. But you can find it at RockAuto.com. I was wanting to go racing that night thats why i spent sooo much.
