When starting a cold engine rattling sound

Hello all.

Maybe you know my problem.
When starting a cold engine rattling sound, which disappears after 20-30 seconds and is not repeated in subsequent starts the engine.

More than likely the timing chain tensioners. What oil filter are you using?

yeah, sounds like timing chain tensioners.

and i can tell you, using motorcraft 5w20 and a motorcraft filter has made no difference on my timing chain startup rattle.

Timing chain tensioner noise due to lower oil pressure at start up when cold. A anti drain back oil filter should help as it helped mine.

Yep in that rap time my mech oil pressure gauge reads ZERO until rap stops then oil pressure builds. I thought from old posts it was low pressure not zero pressure.

Timing chain tensioner. Prolly the primary. Make sure to get guide rails when doing this job as there is sure to be damage on the fixed position sides.

same here on my electrical gauge.
but after the noise stops the gauge comes up quick.

If you want to reduce cold viscosity, lower the first number, not the second number. I'd recommend a 0W-30 oil for a stock NA 4V.

I switched to Castro full syn. Too, I was informed its produced a lot closer (type of oil) to amsoil than Mobil1
But my next oil change I'm trying G-oil

My '96 had the startup rattle for 10 years. I used Motorcraft FL-820S filters and Valvoline 5W30 oil. The thing ran like a sewing machine other than the startup rattle that only lasted for about 5 seconds or so.

LS's have different problems then MK8's. LS's the timing parts break apart. The later years have upgraded metal tentioners but I still don't trust 3.9's.
