I had the "gear display data error" come up on the message center. Went to the store, bought a new one, replaced it, adjusted shift linkage, hopped in the car and everything seems fine. Well, it starts doing it again, P R N D all work fine, but when I get to second, it jumps to drive, put it in first, it jumps to drive on the gauge cluster, put it in park, it takes 5 seconds or more to catch up. Could this be the PCM, or should I mess with the shift linkage some more? It just happens randomly. I also just took it for a drive around the block, put it in drive, and got to the stop sign, then it said gear display data error, then after a few, it showed i was in drive. When I got home, every gear I wanted to put it in, it would stay there for a second, then jump back to the d on the gauge cluster. It drives fine in every gear that the shifter is in, just doesn't show it right on the gauge cluster.

ok gear data error is a computer issue....i suggest you get a hold of Alex Ultimatesvt like right now....send him a message he had this issue and he fix it a few weeks ago.

Had the same exact issue, ppl will tell you to swap the mlps or the small board underneath the shifter ... That's all a waste of time. Swap the ECU asap. You know there are plenty members here that are willing to sell you one. I just swapped mine after months of frustration & finally it worked! By the way, when the ecu goes bad, it eventually starts shifting a little firmer so swap that ecu as soon as you can.

When you switched out your ECU, did you have to change keys and lock cylinders too? I'm just wondering if the PATS system will be affected by a different ECU. I've got to do this to mine too. I haven't had the "Gear Display Error" in a long time but it does happen once in a blue moon. I started putting the shifter in neutral, engaging the parking brake, turning the engine off, and then putting it in park and haven't had the issue since.

Ummm, no, no problem at all. Everything else works as it should. My car is back to being 100% PERFECT!

Well, it doesn't do it as much as it used to with the old one, but it does it maybe once or twice a day now. I'll have o get another pcm then and swap it out and see what happens, just low on funds right now, thanks everyone!

I got my ECU for $30.00 so low funds isn't a big deal. Trust me, I know a thing or two about low funds. Ask around. Someone on here will sell you an ECU for cheap.

On the ecu, would a 98 one work, or does it have to be 97, since we are dealing with obd2 and they are possibly year specific? As stated above I figured PATS would come into play but I guess not. Is it alright to use a different catch code on Gen 2s?

I know you won't want to hear this but....ever think about trading to a Gen1? Just a thought. Less problems, more power, better looking, you know!

I can't argue with such statements! :D I like them both, and I actually sold my Gen 1, to a good friend of mine, and he promised to take care of her. Loved my Gen 1, way faster then my Gen 2 it seems, and not as many problems, unless you had to deal with the IAC, or had crappy headlights. Gen 2, had every common problem so far with this one, and my Gen 1 may have been black, and you could see every little imperfection, but the body sure was in better shape! I just love the rear neon on Gen 2's, and the interior is nicer, not to mention the awesome headlights. :D I would take both either way, as they both have pros and cons.
