Great Deal on gear sets and a ?

which one of you high-rollers is gonna fill up my tank every other day?...if all my driving (500/week) was non-traffic jam highway driving, I'd get 25 mpg, not 19....with that equation a 4.10 will knock me from 21-22 down to around 15-17 (because of traffic jams).....
also, with 173.5k, and a leaking front seal of the tranny; I may consider having the tranny dropped, rebuilt, j-modded, and the rear end rebuilt...why change the gears if it's just gonna kill my tranny in a few thousand miles? Unless the j-mod can be done for a couple hundred without dropping it

Jmod is super cheap to do. and the 4.10s from my logic will actually help you mpg in traffic jams and crap. you will burn more gas trying to get the car to move then you will with a steeper gear. the steeper gear will get the heavy ass car to move sooner so you can get to a nice cruising speed vs always having to be under heavy pedal to get it to move with the lower gear. you combine that logic a nice tune. some good o2 senors and what not you will get an around town increase

if you are that worried about your trans and fuel mileage, don't do a gear swap.

routine maintenance first. ie, leaking trans.

the leak is negligible...it's been leaking since Cherokee Ford serviced it about 10k miles ago...I still don't need to add fluid yet;
I'll just do the gears and worry about the trans if/when it slips..not gonna pay 700 to fix that small trans leak....
flip a coin to determine 3.73 or 4.10...reality is I won't know until I try both

Ok. I'll spill the beans. I am averaging 15mpg with 4.30 gears on 26" tall tires. So actually my gear ratio is closer to 4.60 now LOL. Not just that but I also have a 3800 stall converter that constantly spins the rpms over 3k even on light throttle. Add to that a rich tune that is at 12.5 A/F ratio and my cinder block throttle foot. This is mixed driving figures and my car shifts at 7k rpms wide open which I enjoy quite frequently. If your car gets 15mpg with just a gear swap, you have other issues that are unrelated.

There is a sticky at the top of the page and the search function will yield tons of info. I just did mine in August and you need two new paper separator gaskets that cost about $8, new filter, some drill bits and new trans fluid. You may need a pair of updated accumulators but mine did not. Pretty basic but somewhat confusing to do for the first time and not being real familiar with modern or any transmission valve body's.

A very fun mod and with my current crappy rear tires was getting 2-3 shift rubber.

define 'super cheap'....doesn't the trans have to be dropped?

no just remove the valve body. the most expensive part about it is buying the fluid to refil it up. pretty much you need a couple of drill bits. a couple of new springs a pressure control valve and solinoid. (not needed for jmod but well worth replacing while your in there) and some valve body gaskets and umm tranny filter and about 40 minutes of time give or take.

of you goto youtube and youtube dirty dog performance. youll find his video on how to swap all the stuff. the only difference is youll drill your own valve body out

Thanks again for sharing the info on the pricing. I'm very stoaked about getting these. Can not wait to install them!

Explorers use a 31-spline system, don't they?

Doesn't matter, you're not using the cage, just the ring & pinion - they're all the same as long as it's an 8.8" rear.

Now, you can't use the trac-lok unit from an Exploder because the side gears are 31 spline and our axles are 28 spline.

thats incorrect. you can use a 31 spline trak-lok.

To use 31 spline wouldn't you then need 31 spline axle shafts? How do the Mark VIII 28 spline axles go into a 31 spline carrier? I think the limo came with the 31 spline so you could find a pair of those.

No you cannot thats a 7.5 rear end. Looks alot like the 8.8 but its smaller.

i talked to the guy, he sounds CERTAIN it's a 8.8...somehow he messed up making the ad; and there were 2000 Rangers with an 8.8....should the outside diameter of an 8.8 ring be 8.8"? i think a 4.10 has 37 teeth on an 8.8...don't wanna get jipped again

I have done 7.5 gears in rangers before. Yes the OD of the 8.8 gears should measure that and the 7.5 should be 7.5 in dia.

screw 3.55s. and 3.73 is the pansy compromise gear. get the 4.10s.

Not if your races start at 100 mph. Out here in the BC boonies we don't have any stop lights and stop signs are only on two way roads.

So we egg each other on till we get to 160 Km/h or so on the freeway and then GO. My 93 is good at that kind of nonsense stock. I will pick up a trac lock at perhaps 3.55 max when I get to that. Mine is golden now so probably next year in the spring.
