My neon ballast stopped working on me this last weekend. I was reading up on glitchs site and it said to cut or insulate the wire mesh coming from the panel that is normally grounded the the inverter. Have any of you done this? I will be replaceing it with a functional oem unit.

There is another blk ground wire that attached to the inverter base, should I leave that one intact? I'm assuming yes.

Lastly, what type of epoxy have you guys used reattach the neon housing mounting bolts/studs? Would some jb weld suffice?
 
I'd like some info on this too. Why cut or insulate it? Like, the whole thing that is visible to be cut? Do we do anything after that?
 
From what his site said the wire mesh will short out the inverter if water gets inside of the housing, it's also for radio interference.

Ground Screw on the base plate for the inverter: (Wire Mesh)
This ground screw is for EMI purpose. (Radio interference) and has no affect on neon operation other then shorting the inverter if water is inside the housing.
(It has been found to be most desirable to disconnect and insulate the wire mesh from any metal structure or ground)

1.Disconnect the wire mesh for the base plate
2.Protect the mesh from coming in contact with any metal structure
3.Or cut the mesh metal off

Wait....you've got a Glitch ballast...but you're going to install an OEM one instead?

Yes, but I found out my spare oem ballast (keyword: free) works so i'm going that route. Two of the four mounts were partially broken so I couldn't really sell it anyways. I fixed the mounts and plan on using it till it dies, then i'll switch over.
 
No, the mesh comes from the actual neon housing and attaches/grounds the the oem ballast. From what he wrote it sounds like he suggests leaving the wire mesh disconnected from the oem ballast so that it doesn't have the chance to ever ground out again due to water in the housing.
 
Removed and disconnected mine. Working great ever since.

Everything I have been told is that the wire mesh shieds your AM signal from the neon frequency interferance.

That shouldn't be an issue as I listen to very little radio if any. Thanks for the heads up though. :D
 
I was able to dig into it after work today. I ended up super glueing each broken tab/bolt (4 total) one at a time so that I could align each correctly. I figured a dab of sg would give them enough strength for the initial test fitment.

Waiting for it to dry up so I can apply the jb weld.

Nice and clean now. I'm :confused: regarding all that dribble.

Dude, don't mean to hijack your thread but since we're on the subject of NEONS I have to ask a question...

Might as well use this thread for neon info. Maybe it can be made into a STICKY.
Here's my particular issue...

First & foremost on both cars, neither neon's will NOT turn on if I have the lights set on auto. I have to manually turn them on for the neon's to work. Once I have the car on, The Neon's on both of my '97's work... as long as the car is turned on.

On my prairie tan the moment I turn the car off, the light glows bright (as if brake is pressed) & as soon as I hit the lock button on my key fob the neon turns off.

On the black '97 Neon works fine & when I turn off the car, the neon turns off. (This doesn't happen all the time). Maybe 50% of the time. Sometimes it will stay on but same as my prairie tan, as soon as i hit the lock button on the key fob, the neon turns off.

Alex, I think I would like that but I would never set my lights on auto! Even 98% of the Gen 1 owners do not use the auto light function. I bet 98% of the Gen 2 owners also don't use it either. When I bought my first one in 2005, I cut it off from the get go. Try turning that function off and see what happens. Even if it stays on until you hit lock on the remote, I'd like it myself. Wouldn't let it bother me.

Hijack accomplished.
 
Why not just use your hand and turn the switch when you see it's dark enough? Go with parking lights first and then headlights when needed. Some use the feature and it is a nice one if it worked right with everything and didn't give any problems.

The auto lamp feature is why most of the Gen 1's headlight housings ended up being all burned up inside. Why ride around in the daylight with a 65 watt halogen bulb burning in that small compartment... Of course they didn't know back then that the chrome was being burned up but that is a big part of why most of them are all burned up today.

Never knew the auto lamp was a problem...can't blame auto lamp for burning up the housings...blame driving at night lol

Although I have noticed it can be a little sensitive say in the shade or pulling into a garage that's fairly well lit...

And to not hijack...ditch the braided wire cut that **** out

Jb welded the broken bolts and the unbroken ones for added reinforcement. Also mounted the ballast with its new legs aswell.

I ended up cutting the wire mesh but left the other ground intact.


Annnnnd, back to the shityness that are my pictures.

:/ Dude, sorry... Wasn't my intention... Just thought this would be a great STICKY thread since there are no sticky's about neon's.
