You'll need the actual SCT Tuning software to manipulate the PCM code, then recomplie it - so you can then reload it to your car. It's called the Pro Racer Package (PRP). The software comes with the uncompiled base version of most PCM codes, which you then modify (using the software), re-compile and then upload.

Otherwise you'll do what most of us do - use the services of a shop that does it for us.... and they e-mail us new tunes as needed.
 
haha i wasn't gonna try and re-write pcm my last roommate used to be able to do all that noise, but not i. no i'd take a preburned setup from torrie
 
Depends. If it's a "dyno day" where a bunch of people head to a shop for an event, it's a discounted rate. Usually 75 bucks around these parts. At the shop I went to it was 60 bucks for 3 pulls. I only did two because I didn't have the XCAL with me to change back to stock to get numbers with. If you go to a place without a group, it'll be signifigantly more. I know it cost me 175 for 2 pulls with air/fuel monitoring at Mustang Magic in Deer Park to have my 87 LSC checked out after I put a blower on it.
 
I'm assuming that one needs to buy the XCal before going about getting new tunes? Also, has anyone taken a stab at modifying tunes themselves? If I have a decent understanding of computer science, would I be able to poke around to get a feel and then compile? Or is it just a bunch of gobblety gook that you have to already know how to do it to do anything.

If you want to poke around and learn yourself, get Sniper. If you want to leave it to someone else, get SCT. The sniper Special Forces is for the do-it yourselfers, the Sniper Commando is about equal to SCT Pro racer and cheaper but just as complex. However, it is cheaper than PR and you can tune 2 cars with it, more if you buy more credits. If your a glutton for punishment and like math, get Tweecer(if they even support our cars yet).
 
Torrie did my car about a year ago (02 LS8). I get slightly better power and much better trans response. We spent a lot of time on the trans (7 tunes). At my request he also removed the park and neutral rev limiters and made it so that my SST will start in 1st gear. I also get (on same tune) 440 miles per tank of gas insted of the 400 I used to get.
 
None of the 2000-2002 cars start in 1st while using SST. That's the way they come programmed from the factory.

Read it and weep my friend. I drive 68 miles per day to go to work. I can drive 6 days to and from and 1 day to or from. I know the odo is acurate because my Lincoln is not my only vehicle. You have to understand also that I live in the Florida Keys. We are (literally) 4-8 feet above sea level at all times. There are no hills, and highway speeds never exceed 65. I have about 55 miles of highway and 13 miles of mixed/city in my commute. Interstate highway driving also carries about 440 mile range.
 
For contrast my F150 4X4 got 14.5 MPG in South Carolina, and when I moved to the keys I was getting 21.
