worst 2 days of my life

Not sure if the LS is like this or not but a lot of newer cars use "Torque to yield" bolts. Once they have been torqued, they are stretched and not to be re-used. Kinda sucks, I had the heads off my '65 Mustang a dozen times and never had to get new bolts. Technology & progress!

Yes, the LS uses torque to yield bolts for the heads.

I see a bunch of BS on that estimate too. They charged to clean spark plugs? Then charged for a new set of spark plugs? 700 for a head gasket set? F*ck you. I've never checked prices for that, but that's a fark ton of money for a gasket set.

And a $15 discount on $1100 in parts? I'd punch them in the d*ck for such a statement.

Get all your parts from Tasca or Max and only pay the labor. Or cut the bill in half and just install a different engine.

Is there a more reputable shop in your area? Are you SURE it's head gaskets? I honestly have never heard of one fail on an LS. Then again, if you have been overheating, and overheating for an extended period, it could warp the head.

My local trusted shop charges 62.50 shop labor. Dunno where you are at, but $90/hr sounds like dealership labor.

I agree! I would look at your de-gas bottle and make sure it wasn't replaced.

If it was they conned you into a bunk repair bill. De-gas bottles are a common issue with this car that causes the same symptoms. Cheap fix, even cheaper and easy DIY.

so true

head gaskets? something is not right here. Check on the cost of head gaskets. With fail safe mode, can't believe you need head gaskets. good luck

Just think how many people do this type of thing and have no forum to consult for advice. They just cut a check and continue like everyone in the world is an honest person that is doing the good for the people.

You are lucky you have this forum as a resource. Paythem for the labor hours thus far and tow it home and replace all of the plastic cooling pieces and change oil, coils, plugs. Of course ordering your own parts.

Don't let another shop win.

Yeah almost $900 for head gaskets, wow. I like the plugs being almost $15 each. I just got done doing mine with Champion Platinums, after rebate... $0.00 total.

Well, I guess this is what happens with dealers and limited production engines like the V8. Hey wait a minute. Just did some complex figuring(Engineer background yah know), and it looks like you have a V6(ie the plugs work out to 6). Isn't the six banger pretty much a plain vanilla Ford V6? If that is true, then you are really getting a "job".

Jim Henderson

Whoa that makes it even worse.

Nothing special about the six.

I have made it quite obvious they are ripping you off. I even added some parts in the cooling system that I know ill fail in the near future and I included some engine gaskets that they did not. It is not understood what they mean by spark plug boot. Maybe they are melted. I added 8 of those also. This is for the V8. See below for the V6

+1 Most likely degas tank. Mine used to regularly dump its load everywhere. And if thats new, then its probably air in the system or some cheap plastic. Tow to a Ford dealer if its under warranty, fix yourself if its not. I have never seen a blown head gasket in all the complaints here. Not impossible, but very hard to believe! I though my $8 NGK irridiums were insane. I would slander this garage's name all over the place... total crap! And that insulting discount... is that even enough to buy astro glide these days? :( Don't let them F you!

Dude they are trying to get by on you. I replaced my whole timing assembly for less that and that is a lot more parts then you had. Included in that total was a thermostat housing, serpentine belt, and coolant crossover pipe. The Ford head gasket was $60 so I dont know where they got you that price. I agree with the rest of everyone and get your car back from them. Damn this just pains me to hear.

Jesus, you're getting f'd...Anything under 1700 would be acceptable. They will make some money on parts no matter what, but thats outragous.

Do your homework, show them what it should be ($$) and agree on a price if it is indeed the head gasket. If it's not take it somewhere else.

P.s. I would have surprised them with a visit, assuming you called to let them know ur stopping by. They've allready showed that there out to f you. For all you know they could've contaminated the oil/coolant before you're arrival...02

Good point. I was just watching something about garages that do this. There are way more out there than you could believe and its a shame. They could have made sure all this is f&^%ked up so you have no choice but to fix it all.

I'm surprised the mechanic didn't do a standard headgasket check with the little doohickey thingamajig tool that looks for exhaust gasses in the coolant.

And 14 bucks for spark plugs?

Man, you ought to see what they charge for plugs at the Stealership for my 05 F-150! They want $21 a piece! I bought a set of E3's at Advanced and handed em to the service rep.

Sorry to hear. If they haven't started working on it, I would get the car back, get your own parts and do it yourself, or find someone to help you.Should've checked here first before letting them do any work. Use the forum man, it will save you a lot of money.
