:(

I checked the proper fuses, tried turning the wheels, tried shifting with the key turned half way

I recently tapped into the 'compass transducer' in the back for a 12v lead, but I don't see how this could have any effect on that

any ideas or suggestions?

it's a 93

check to see if there is a pen cap stuck by the shifter. I did that once and the car wouldnt come out of park

+ like 10.........check if the brake lights come on..look for broken wires at the connector on the switch

I rocked the car forwards and back, it went into gear after that, but I have no brake lights :( I'll check the connections tomorrow, maybe I knocked something loose when pulling out the carpet?

Also, check your fuses! If your brake lights won't come on - your car won't shift out of park.

To start it, see if you can get it to neutral with the car not running, and fire it up from there.

ok, there is more to it...

now it will shift into gear regardless of if I have the brake pedal in or not and the brake lights do not come on

faulty brake on off switch?

if I test the wires coming from it how many volts should I be looking for?

You could have a bad MLPS.

???

The MLPS only enables the ability of the car to start in park or neutral, not whether it will shift out of park.

I do not know the Gen2 details, but Gen1 has a interlock from the ignition/steering column to the shifter. It prevents the shifter from moving out of park unless the ignition is in the 'on' position.

Crap, I missed your post from the 23rd. If you have no brake lights and pulled up the carpet I would bet you the brake light switch is bad or off as Froggy and wood e said. Its up on the brake pedal arm. It moves around a little but make sure its in place and that you can see the plunger move with the brake pedal. Test to make sure its getting voltage in and then see if it has any going out when tripped. I bet you moved it or dissconnected it when the carpet came out.

As to why the interlock does not work anymore... you prolly broke it while chasing the problem. You may have dissconected it (but I think its normally closed) or just jammed it open. If you put some serious force on the button to "make" it move then its prolly broke now. :(

I think I was drinking when I read and wrote that:D

thanks for your help guys, another question, my turn signals work but not my hazards, is this related or something completely different?

Multifunction switch.

Wiggle, push and wiggle, push again on the hazard warning button while moving the turn signal stalk both directions.

Worked for mine on the '93.
