wiper arm broken

I have a 98 Linc Mark VIII; the driver side wiper arm has been broken (totally off) To what extent is the damage? I have been told that I will need to replace the entire unit/piece (or what ever it is called) that stretches from one arm to another?? Or is replacing the wiper arm only complete the repair?

Thanks I can do that in the morning; now all I can say is the wiper arm and a piece that connects it to where it belongs;which prob doesn't help you much

It actually sounds like the entire assembly.. I would think he broke the post which the arm attaches to.
