Will 93 Mark VIII transmission work in 96 Mark VIII?

Hello,

I have a 96 LSC that the tranny just went out in... it doesn't make the 2-3 shift, and slips out of gear. It has had a transmission leak for a while and I'm afraid I let the level get too low too many times and it burned up the 3rd and 4th gear clutches.

I have a 93 Mark VIII parts car with a good transmission, and I was wondering what I would need to do in order to get the 93 transmission to work in the 96.

I wouldn't mind doing the swap at all, since the 93 actually seemed to shift a lot more aggressively than the 96 ever did.

I would appreciate any help.

First answer is use the search function and you will find the answer with less hassle from all on the board.

Second answer is yes the trans will fit but the shifting firm part is from the PCM in the 93that cannot be changed into the 96. The rest of the answer is find yourself a 98 or newer trans and you will be better off.

FYI, the reason the shifts were better was due to the computer programming, not the transmission itself. 93 computers had more aggressive tunes and shift schedules then the later years.

This is true. The 93's PCM commanded 15 psi more fluid pressure for firmer shifts, 1-2. Sadly, you can't use the 93 PCM in the 96 but the 96 PCM can be chipped and the same or better program can be burned on the chip but I suggest j-modding the trans before installing it. That alone will give you firmer shifts and if your 1-2 2-3 accumulators haven't been upgraded in the 93, then do that also. If the springs aren't broken in either, then I wouldn't waste the money on them. Just doing the j-mod would make you happy and also make the trans a lot happier to have more fluid pressure where it's needed.

All you need is a cordless drill, the print out of what holes to drill, which I will not provide,(someone else may), certain drill bits and two new separator plate gaskets. Those are around $3.00 each. You'll love it.

Thanks guys. My first priority is just to get this thing back on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible, since it's my daily driver... so I will probably just pay somebody to do the swap and call it good. Even if a 98+ transmission would be better, it doesn't really make sense for me to buy another tranny if I can just use the one from my parts car.

But I had another idea... what about swapping over the whole drivetrain from the 93, with engine, tranny, PCM, wiring harness, and all? The 93's engine is in better shape anyway... the 96 has stuck IMRC's, detonates at WOT, and leaks like a sive. What all would that swap involve? If it wouldn't cost too much more than just swapping the tranny, I think I would rather go that route.
