So I ordered the Transgo shift kit from Transmissioncenters.org and now I’m in the process of having it installed. So I go to my local performance shop which I’ve dealt with a few time for other things. Well they can’t drop my transmission so he recommends I take it to a guy he used to work with at the dealership. I go to the dealership and speak with the guy and he give me a pretty good deal (I guess) $200 for the drop and $150 for everything else only thing is that he can’t do it until middle of next week. I tell him okay and that I’ll see him next week but on my way home I think to myself what another transmission place would charge me. I stop at a National Transmission center and the guy first asks me “Why you want to do that to your car?”… I tell him everything I’ve done to my car, intake, exhaust, SCT programmer. So from there he said it’d be a good idea to get an entire rebuild and the total would be around $1,000 to $1,200. Next I go to a Cottman Transmisson center and after I tell him what I have and he says to me “Why you want to do that to your car?” Didn’t get a quote just walked out. So on my last stop I go into a Aamco Transmission he starts off with the same thing… After we get through why I want to do that to my car he goes on to say that I shouldn’t use Transgo and that I should use Transtar and that its a brand that they use all the time. He goes on to say that if I’m going to use the Transgo shift kit that I’m not going to like it and that it’s going to wear out my transmission sooner! He also recommended that I get a chip and that he has a chip in his Altima. He says that he beats 350Z’s, Infiniti’s and that he can put a whoop’n on a 4.6 Mustang!
I’m to the point now that I don’t know that to do and that I’m not really looking to spend the money on a full rebuild but I also don’t want to get the shift kit done and have to do a rebuild anyways! All the negative crap that these places have told me have me rethinking the whole thing…:(

I remember some of the feed back you guys left me the last time I had this question (http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=44521&highlight=transmission+shift+kit) and I feel a little better about it. Still don't know what I'm going do though. Maybe there just hatin'!

Sorry for the long read.

I don't know what to tell you about the kit but you have to understand that this car just does not have that type of hype.

People don't understand that you cant just get a chip like that guy did for his Altima etc,.. etc,...

The guys that did my intake were awesome but when they gave me ideas about performance on my car I laughed at them knowing what I do now from reading here but I also knew that they werent wrong or bad mechanics,... this is just not a common car to get into that type of stuff. Its just like how lots of people even some of the better people locally that could do some good tunes and performance type mods to your car would think that it is a modular engine but its really not at all.

Some people have lots of good knowledge but they just don't know about this car specifically.

I used to get that all the time from people with my 87 LSC. I once had a guy at a junkyard - when I was looking for T5 trans to bell housing bolts - almost bust a guy laughing that I was putting a 5 speed in. Some people are just really narrow-minded.

why do you want to put a shift kit in?

That's very funny coming from a guy who has a supercharger on his LS!:D

I just want more power on the low end and firmer shifts. I'm not looking to race or anything like that I just want to have fun with my daily driver. Also according to some of the feed back left for the Transgo shift kit it is a quality upgrade.
Didn't people giving you weird/funny looks when you said that you were putting in a supercharger??? Well you did it anyways and who's laughing now!

You I'm sure...

put the thing in and be done with it.

Hell, do it yourself, it's not hard.

I hate that question.

I went to a place called "CUSTOM PERFORMANCE EXHAUST" CUSTOM!!! PERFROMANCE!!!! EXHAUST!!!

I walk in and the guys just sitting there doing nothing, doesnt even say hi. So im like "hey hows it going?" and he goes "...Busy" and thats all he says. so im like "i was wondering if i could get a quote on my car?" he says "what is it?" i said "a 2000 lincoln LS, i have an X pipe and i was wonde-" he cuts me off mid sentance and says "why you want to do that to a lincoln?" I was sooo pissed off. I wanted to say "why you want to turn down a paycheck, looks like this hole in the wall could use some money" anyways he says "pipe bender is down, and we dont do custom work anymore"...i just walked out.

I know how you feel man, everyone i work with (at a mercedes dealership) always asks me why i want to do it to a lincoln.

Just try to get over the bull:q:q:q:q people say to you, try and get it done. I kind of think once im in the 13's ill be getting more credit and less stupid questions. gotta keep moving forward, custom cars arnt built in a day. And people think that if you go a different route your crazy, I say your better then everyone else. It may be a simple shift kit, but how many other lincoln LS's have them? its part of breaking away from the norm and doing something on your own, critisism comes from every angle.

Thanks trilkb!:D I'm probably going to go with the hook up that I'm going to get at the dealership. It sounds like anywhere else I go there going to give me hell about it and probably winding up screwing it up just so I have to come back and get more service from them. And cost me an arm and leg!!!

Why do you think transmission/automotive guys are so against shift kits?

To be honest, i didnt know they were against shift kits

I think there against performance 4 doors.

Some people need to take a joy ride in either of the following, C63, C55, E55, E63, S600, S55, S63, Volvo s60R, BMW 540 sport 6 speed, Audi RS6, CTS-V, Infiniti M45...theres so many to list.

The 1st gen lincoln in my opinion is a pretty bad attempt at a performance sedan. It needs work, but theres no reason it cant be a good performing car, people just need to get over the fact that its a LS.

Thanks to my work i finally got to drive a C63 on the street. put an Anti-4 door sport person in that, if he says anything negative he should be put into the C6 Z06 i also got to drive. Lets just say this, that car ruined my day, and my overall opinion of chevy. Screw driving that thing unless your doing anything but racing.

As for that altima, that guy has to have the 3.5 motor. they are quick cars without work, They have the Maxima motor and if Iam not mistaking that motor pumps out around 320hp stock. Well depending on the year.

3.5 puts out 287hp. unless its a brand new one it puts out 306hp.

the altima has a detuned version of it, around 260 i beleive.

Why you want to do that to your car

My answer to people that asked me, "why" to an Aveo. "Because I can! I like to be different".
Truth was, it was all I could afford so I did because I can. Check it out, my cardomain in my sig.

Well no matter what year or how much horsepower the Altima has the fact remains that it’s a 4 door sedan and goes pretty fast. Now in my own opinion when I think Altima I think affordable luxury and performance. Performance in the since that its going to get me where I need to go safely and quick! I don’t think Mustang beater?! But that’s just it, the person who design the performance version Altima thought outside the box. And now people who own Altima’s are greatful!

What if Lincoln had somebody working for them like that to design the LS? I’d be in a better place right now that for sure!!!

I get crazy looks when I mentioned mines 4.10ed. Even more so when I tell them what I had to do to do so.

Your car do what you want.

I would think that you could firm up your trans with the Xcal enough to make you happy and skip the trans kit.

Mine slams plenty hard...enough to almost get the wheel out of my hand sometimes if I'm holdin on to loose.

I have an Xcal 3 but I've heard things about reprogramming the transmission to have firmer shifts and lincoln00 basically sums it up right here: yea but a shift kit makes it improve the shift with out working the pump harder... thats the difference.... pumps and clutches are what go bad in a automatic.. I have hear the trans go is the way to go because it shifts soft when cruising and hard when the its under hard load... Quote from reply #7 on the thread link I attached.

Fair enough.

But my trans doesn't shift that hard for normal driving really. I've been running a very hard shift almost 30k now, so far so good.

And see that's my issue! Your car has firmer shifts now correct? Well are they that bad?! If so you have it that way for a reason right? You have 4.10 gears so your not going for normal. I don't want normal either but I don't want that hard of shifts but harder than what it gives me now. Do shift kits normally make people regret getting them installed?

i drove a 87 trans am GTA with a shift kit and a 355

I still remember how it felt, i personally liked it. Felt like the transmission was sure about what it was doing. The LS feels like it gets confused between 2nd and 3rd if you ask me. sometimes i give it gas in 2nd and its like it forgets what its doing, and goes for 3rd, then forgets about 3rd and it and stays in 2nd. it really makes me hate it! 2nd and 3rd feel the exact same to me, and there so short that they seem pointless!

I hope a SCT tuner fixes that!

I can honestly say I love the hard shifts, car feels lame without it.

And you might be surprized how normal this cars drives on 4.10s, this motor is extremely smooth at higher rpms. I manually shifted on a on ramp yesterday and got into 4th at 80ish and never put it in 5th. I cruized in 4th at 3800-3900 rpm for several miles not even noticing.

Anyways who did your tune? Maybe they can bump it up some to get you what you want. I have the Xcal2 and it lets me dial up 25% or down 25% each shift, have you moved it up yourself at all?

If you have SST its shifts harder in SST mode BTW.

if you want outside the box go buy that new Hyndaui. Runs at 14sec 1/4 mile 0 to 60 in 5.2 and its a4 door luxury car. Or go but the Galant rally art edition. I had one of those before my Ls, its totalled now thank you UPS. But that car was pretty fast and those altima owners were really surprised and so were those mustang boys. And they are faster than th Ls with the 8. Or go with the volvo R60. That is a really nice car 300hp. And faster than all the cars above. That car is the only reason I even think of my ex girlfriend lol

Why would buying any of those cars make a person out side of the box??

Or dont go into as big of debt and drop money on a XCAL, INTAKE, and EXHAUST, and be in the 14's as well.

I've gotten 02LSE96LSC91SE84TC feelings on harder shift tune vs. shift kit. What do the rest of you think? I know a lot of you already have Xcal's so there maybe some bias but I ready for it.

I have an SST on my LS and I use it from time to time and I can live and enjoy the firm shifts (as long as I shift it when I'm supposed to). If that's all its comparable too I can live with it!
