Who to get a tune from?

It seems like the only two names I see come up for tuning the LS are ILLS and Torrie. ILLS is out of the country, so is the only option at this point Torrie? Any idea when ILLS might be back and willing to help? Any other options, or opinions?
 
You're best bet would be torrie since ILLS is out for now. You can also get a dyno tue which is better.

I think you need it to dyno tune. The shop wold use their software to write you a tune and then you would flash your pcm with the tune in your sct

Well, it's still a car. They'll have it there to see what improves it's hp and torque and what doesn't. It's different when you ask someone to write you a tune without the car, thats when they need to know more about the car. If the guy at the performance shop knows what he's doing, he should be able to get you a good tune with your ls there

Data-logging should do a pretty good job of bridging that gap if the tuner is proficient at what they do.
 
hey alax....but wudnt the tunes that torrie and ills have be tried and true tunes that are dyno proven and spefically tuned for the ls???? like im pretty sure y we pay the extra money for the tunes is ebcause he already put the ls on the dyno...unless they specifically need to dyno tune it again since each car runs different with the mods that we have....even tho we have to tell torrie n ills the mods we have wen he does the tune ne way....im confuzzled now...
 
To me for these cars you will not gain a lot in mostly stock form as far as the difference in a tune from Torrie or ILLS to a dyno tune would be minimal, not like these cars are high horsepower or have power adders. Especially for the money to dyno tune, to me the best gains of the tune on these cars is going to be the improvement to trans and drive by wire.

Just my .02, but if you got more money than you know what to do with go for the dyno tune, just so no one gets me wrong I am pretty sure there would be a gain having it dyno tuned, but cost effective I would not think so.
 
I have to agree with Nick here. Getting the car tuned on the dyno is not cheap and you still need to buy the Xcal to load the tune anyway. The money can be better spend elsewhere.
 
The shop where I'll get mine done charge 80 an hour I think. You're right about it not being cost efficient to dyno tune the ls, but even small gains here and there add up. Compare to NO2, everything else is not cost efficient. Why go with a CAI when it'll give you 5-15 hp when you can get 100 with NO2, Thats 6-20x more hp than a CAI for a little more than double the money.

I'm getting it dyno tuned for sure to get the most out of it, try to squeeze a little more out of her and I'll be able to tell people how much improvement, if any, I got from ILLS tune and if it's worth it to have it dyno tuned. I also plan on comparing my exhausts. How much I gain, if any, by having magnaflows over flowmaster. I'll dyno it, go to the muffler muffler shop to install new exhuast and then dyno it with the new exhaust.
 
Torrie claims about 14hp at the rear wheel on a 2nd Gen Lincoln LS, plus about 16hp from the K&N FIPK puts it about 30 hp at the rear wheel. The tune make a big difference with the throttle response and improvement in the transmission shifting. For about $650 expense, I'm very happy what I got for the money.
 
Every car is different, most canned tunes suck, elevation can effect a tune. Do it yourself or get a dyno tune.

I bought my tuner from Torrie & he put 3 custom tunes on it Performance, Aggressive & Economy. I've been using Performance since I got it, but today after I picked my car up from the dealer I used the Aggressive one to see how it is & I love it! Torrie is easy to get a hold of & he shipped my tuner out right away & answers any questions I have had since I got it.

Yeah but every ls is different and will see different number with the same tune. Plus, not all the ls's are in the same climate and altitude. It's in a way guessing how your ls would react to the tune and even if they have proven their tune to give great results on their ls, using that same tune on yours can't beat a tune done specifically for your car if you dyno it. ILLS tune was great, I love the change it gave my ls, but I'm am still interested to see the gains on a dyno tune.
 
Oh cool. I didn't know your ls was tuned, much improvements?. Yeah but how would i know how much I improved it without a dyno.

Not gonna happen. Rear end is already being replaced.

As for the custom tuning, Ive yet to try it all out because of the rear diff situation, still gotta wire in my wideband, then tune. Oh and I tune by tracktimes, not dyno numbers.

every car is different and we all have different mods on our LSs, so it's not tried and true. Whatever was aftermarket on Torrie/ILLS's cars is what the tune is for....anything different and you might have problems....

You should tune by A/F ratio. Track times don't mean a thing if it only makes it down the 1320 once because the A/F ratio was too lean. I found that one out myself a few years ago ;)

That said, Josh, I say find someone who can dyno tune YOUR car. Maybe those guys where we had that dyno day a few years ago? Email/canned tunes are garbage. I found that out with the 300. Best money I ever spent on it was getting the car tuned on a dyno.
 
I was under the impression that buying an xcal from torrie comes with 3 LS tunes for $400 total. Since I've been on this site I've seen nothing but positives about these tunes and now this thread seems to make it sound like it's not worth it. I'm not looking to make a drag car outta my LS, but I am looking to clean up the shifts, improve throttle response, and add a bit more power. I already have exhaust and a K&N FIPK.

It does come with 3 custom tunes from Torrie they are Performance, Aggressive & Economy. I believe I paid $380 for mine & I love it!

they are good just understand that one tune isn't completely universal for every LS. They are in a way like people and one persons diet might not work for another...might work a lil but then you start developing problems. I've heard some people can't get their LS to start once they boot up their LS. I would surely love to get a tune from Torrie or ILLS but I would like getting a tune that was made SPECIFICALLY for my LS....I'm sure the benefits would be even greater.
